Oswego State field hockey suffers second straight loss

The Oswego State field hockey team is back on track after a 4-1 win against Utica University on Sept. 28. After losing three straight games, this win will be important as they have multiple SUNYAC matches scheduled for the month of October.

In the game against Utica, Lakers senior Kacie Simzer opened up the scoring in the first quarter. She was assisted by sophomore Nancy Pagliaroli. Utica responded shortly after, scoring in the second quarter. Utica fought back hard but it was short lived. Simzer also scored the last goal of the game in the third quarter. There were no scorers for either team in the fourth quarter. Simzer’s two goals versus Utica means that she has logged 11 goals so far this season. Simzer leads the Lakers field hockey team in goals, points and shots. Her aggressive offensive play has helped this Laker team win the amount of games that they have won this season.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Jordan also scored two goals against Utica. Jordan scored two goals in the third quarter. After Jordan’s offensive efforts, the Laker team was up 3-1 against the Pioneers. Jordan statistically had the best game of her career against the Pioneers. Scoring two goals and logging four points are both career highs for her. She also logged five shots, all of them on goal against Utica, which were career highs. Jordan’s solid performance is a good sign that the Lakers underclassmen have been improving their game through the course of the season.

Senior goalkeeper for the Lakers, Erica Scheblein, made two saves on three shots on goal against Utica. Scheblein did not have to work as hard as she did in the Laker 4-1 loss against SUNY New Paltz on Sept. 24 when she recorded a season high 18 saves. The loss against New Paltz was the Lakers first conference game of the season.

Looking ahead in the season, the Lakers face off against SUNY Oneonta on Oct. 1. The Lakers team will be looking to add on to their win against Utica and start a winning streak. Oneonta has a record of two wins and five losses so far this season. Oneonta has also yet to play a conference game this season, so they will be hungry and prepped to face off against the Lakers. The month of October is full of SUNYAC matchups for the Lakers team. With a record of 6-3, and four SUNYAC games approaching in the month of October, the Oswego State field hockey team is ready for the action to be underway.
