Oswego State field hockey fall to 0-2 in conference play

The Oswego field hockey team took on their conference rival, the SUNY Geneseo Knights on Oct. 7 in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness night.  The Lakers remained scoreless, as they got bested by the Knights by a score of 2-0.

The Lakers’ offense dominated in the first three minutes of the game, putting up two shots on goal. However, it was all Knights for the rest of the quarter, as they put up five shots in the next five minutes, the sixth one would finally find the net, as the Knights led 1-0 by the end of the first.

The second quarter only had three shots combined from both teams, but the Knights made their shots count, leading to a 2-0 Knights lead at the end of the second.

The second half was highly defensive, with neither team able to score on either side.  Ky Phillips did all she could in this game, facing 15 shots on the night. She left the game saving 13 of those as the Knights won 2-0.

The Lakers moved on to face the struggling Nazareth University Golden Flyers on Oct. 10.  The Lakers produced a shutout game for the Golden Flyers, as they won 2-0.

The defense dominated early in the game, only allowing one shot from the Golden Flyers in the dying minutes of the first quarter.  The Lakers’ offense put up four shots, but none of them would find the net and the quarter remained scoreless.

Defense was also the story of the second quarter, as the Golden Flyers were unable to put up a single shot against the Lakers.  The Lakers on the other hand, put up four shots and four corners before Kaitlyn Jordan scored her first goal of the season at the 25:59 mark, assisted by Gabby Curtis. The Lakers put up two more shots in the first half, none of them finding the goal and the half ended with a 1-0 Lakers lead.

The Lakers wasted no time to extend the lead, as Kate McNally scored just two minutes into the second half, assisted by Erin Schaefer. The Golden Flyers attempted to dig themselves out, putting up two shots with two minutes to go in the third quarter, but they were unable to score and the quarter ended with a 2-0 Lakers lead.

The fourth quarter was scoreless, but the Lakers still outshot the Golden Flyers 5-1.  McNally left the day with career highs in shots with ten, and shots on goal with five. Phillips had a shutout game, with two saves on top of that.

The Lakers also traveled to face the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in an evenly-matched game, but the Lakers went on to lose 1-0.

It was a back-and-forth contest early in the first quarter, with the first shot coming in six minutes into the game. The Golden Eagles outshot the Lakers 3-2, but neither team was able to find the net and the quarter remained scoreless.

The teams exchanged shots in the second quarter until the Golden Eagles scored at the 22:35 mark, their last shot of the half.  The Lakers responded with offensive dominance, putting up three shots, but none of them scored and the Golden Eagles led at halftime 1-0.

Both defenses locked up in the third quarter, with only three shots from both teams combined. After a scoreless quarter, the Lakers headed into the fourth still down 1-0.

The Lakers’ offense heated up in the fourth quarter, putting up six shots in the first four minutes, but this was the most they could do as the Golden Eagles dominated the rest of the game.  The Golden Eagles won the game 1-0 while getting outshot by the Lakers 13-11.  Phillips had five saves in the game, and McNally led the offense with four shots.

The Lakers hope to finish the season strong, as they travel to face the Oneonta Red Dragons on Oct. 21, at 1 p.m.
