Lakers run SUNYAC gauntlet to end regular season

The Oswego State women’s soccer team has three games left in the season. The Lakers record is currently 7-4-3 and they have a conference record of 2-2-2.

The loss against Plattsburgh State on Oct. 8, was a learning moment for the Lakers team. Sophomore goalkeeper Perri Anderson says she knows that it went downhill against Plattsburgh.

“I think our mentality needs to be higher as a team, and we just need to not expect anything when going into competitions,” Anderson said.  “We know we can win them all, and I know we know that as a team, I just think we have to play our best at every game.”

Looking ahead to the Oct. 15 matchup against SUNY Oneonta, this Laker team will be looking to close out the season with an undefeated record at Laker Turf Stadium. Oneonta is coming into the game against the Lakers with a record of 2-8-1, but it is a SUNYAC game. The Lakers need to stay the course and now play down to their competition.

One of the Lakers team captains, senior Graisia Madden, noted how much this season has meant to her and added that it is important to win this upcoming game and make a playoff push.

“This has been one of the best seasons I have been a part of, I think the team clicks together really well, and we have some really good talent,” Madden said. “Using those younger players has been really crucial to our success this season. And obviously making the playoffs in my last year would be really awesome because we haven’t done that since I’ve been here.”

Despite having seven wins on the season, the women’s team has not won a game since Oct. 1. Beating Oneonta can help boost this team’s confidence and then if they continue to win out this season, they have a chance to be ranked very high for SUNYAC women’s soccer.

Moving forward, Lakers womens head soccer coach Brian McGrane knows these last few matchups are key for the Lakers.

“Our ability [is] just to focus on Wednesday first and try and get the three points, but if we don’t, Saturday becomes all that more important,” McGrane said.

Oct. 15 is going to be very important for the Lakers, as winning a conference game over Oneonta will help to propel them into a possible playoff position. There are six teams that make the SUNYAC playoffs, if they are able to beat New Paltz after that, the Lakers could lock themselves into a chance for a SUNYAC title.
