Oswego State men’s basketball remains undefeated before heading to Vegas

Oswego State men’s basketball added to their win streak last weekend. Oswego men’s basketball now has a record of 7-0 with a SUNYAC conference record of 2-0.

Last weekend, the Lakers saw action on both Dec. 1 and 2. Starting with their game on Dec. 1, the Lakers beat SUNY Potsdam by a score of 98-60.

The top performer for Potsdam came off the bench. Potsdam guard Nicholas Cortez recorded 10 points, which was the team-high against the Lakers. Cortez also recorded four rebounds on the day while shooting 2-3 from three-point range.

Ahkee Anderson, junior year guard for Oswego, recorded 13 points while shooting 5-10 from the field. Anderson had a team-high of eight rebounds during the Lakers win over Potsdam. Senior year guard, Jeremiah Sparks, also recorded 13 points against Potsdam. Sparks recorded his season-high of seven assists against Potsdam.

Currently, Potsdam sits at the bottom of the SUNYAC standings. Potsdam lost to SUNY Cortland on Dec. 2. Potsdam has an overall record of 1-7 and a conference record of 0-2.

During the Lakers’ game on Dec. 2, they came out on top over Plattsburgh State. Plattsburgh came into the game having just lost to Cortland by a score of 78-74 on Friday. Oswego won the game comfortably by a score of 101-72.

Jeremiah Sparks got it done for the Lakers, tying his season record with another seven assists against Plattsburgh. Sparks also recorded 17 points during the game while shooting 7-14 (50%) from the field.

Coming off of the bench, Lakers junior year guard Kenny Lazo was finding his rhythm from the three-point line. Shooting a ridiculous 5-6 (83%) from deep, Lazo caught fire for the Lakers. Along with the 17 points, Lazo recorded three assists and three rebounds during the Lakers’ conference win over Plattsburgh.

After the Lakers’ win over Plattsburgh, they moved to no.1 the SUNYAC men’s basketball standings. In second place is SUNY New Paltz with an overall record of 6-1 and a conference record of 2-0. No. 3 is SUNY Cortland with an overall record of 4-2 and a conference record of 2-0.

For the Lakers’ next game, they will travel to Las Vegas for the D3Hoops Classic tournament. Their first game will be played on Dec. 28 against Case Western Reserve University. Case Western men’s basketball has an undefeated record of 6-0. This will be a competitive game for the Lakers.

On Dec. 30, the Lakers will play their second and final game in Las Vegas. Oswego will be going against Pomona Pitzer College, located in California. Pomona-Pitzer men’s basketball has an undefeated record of 8-0 and is yet another competitive team for the Lakers to match-up against.

Going into Las Vegas with an undefeated record and sitting atop the SUNYAC standings can only be a positive for the Lakers. With two wins at the D3Hoops Classic, that will certainly boost the Lakers’ level of confidence for their remaining games this season.
