Lakers stay perfect against Canton with 26-9 senior day win

Nine wins and zero losses; that is now the all-time record for Oswego men’s lacrosse versus SUNY Canton as they picked up an authoritative 26-9 win over the Kangaroos on Saturday.

It  took  little time for the Lakers to break in their sticks during Oswego’s annual “Senior Day”, as Doryn Leclair, a junior transfer from St. Bonaventure University, buried a pair of goals not even two full minutes into the contest. Leclair ended the day with a tremendous six goals, the most in one game by a Laker since graduate Corey O’Connor had the same amount against Plattsburgh State last season.

The Lakers tallied six more goals to give themselves an 8-0 margin, before Ryan Rogers celebrated senior day in a dazzling fashion by taking things into his own hands and increasing the lead even further. Rogers took control of the ball at the midfield line before making his way into the offensive zone untouched and subsequently sniping it past Canton goalie Hayden Todd. This came as just the third goal of the his career, before he added in two more by the game’s end to secure his first ever hat trick.

Rogers was one of three different Lakers to end with a hat trick, as Hayden Coney added in four goals while Leclair had an aforementioned six.

The Lakers’ domination took a brief pause with 2:35 to go in the first quarter, when Jonney Mclear, who had a hat trick in the Roos’ previous game against SUNY Morrisville, scored the team’s first goal to cut the deficit 10-1. Then, in a short span of time before the 15 minutes came to a close, three different Lakers scored and the domination resumed.

The Lakers made a goalie change in the second quarter, as Tyler Novak took to the pipes. The senior stood comfortably in net, ending his time with not a save as the team defense stood tall. Most notably Keagan Stevens and Austin Sroda concluded with seven and six ground balls, respectively.

Offensively, the team continued to control the pace of play. The Lakers tacked on six goals in the second quarter, including five consecutive within the first eight minutes. The younger faces got their shine, as underclassmen Ryan Behringer, Cam Holdsworth and Ethan McConnell all notched a goal.

Freshmen Anthony Albino and Pat McManus closed out the final two periods for the Lakers, which were uncharacteristically back and forth, despite a variety of gymnastic-like saves from the two.

Charles Grandaw of Canton reached a hat trick to give the Roos their seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the contest. Freshman Max Weeks scored his first goal of the year, which was also the 26th and final one of the game for the Lakers.

The Lakers have won six out of their last eight games, improving to 8-3 overall while at 2-2 in the SUNYAC. The team led by Andrew Daly looks to continue their magic in a road trip to SUNY Oneonta, for a contest with the Red Dragons on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
