The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team lifted their win streak to six games after two commanding victories over SUNY Oneonta and Buffalo State.
With the pair of wins, the Lakers are now tied with SUNY Cortland for first place in the SUNYAC as they sit at a flawless 5-0 in conference play. Furthermore, they have outscored their opponents 87-20 during the aforementioned win streak.
The Lakers kicked the weekend off with a 9-2 win over the Red Dragons on home turf. It did not take long for the team to find their footing, as Milena Vassallo navigated through the defense and struck it past Margot Haring for the first goal of the game. The conversion came during a man-up opportunity and was one of two power play goals by the conclusion of the contest.
Alexis Hill then capped off a dominant first quarter to give the Lakers a two-goal margin. The Red Dragons came soaring into the next 20 minutes, though, as Ava Fitzimons cleaned up on her previous miscue and notched two goals to knot the score up. The team proved strong on the other end too, allowing just four shots from the Lakers.
Unfortunately for the Red Dragons, the momentum, which once seemed to be even, would completely shift in favor of the home squad for the remainder of the game.
Aubri Greene opened up the third quarter with a goal, her first of four between the final two quarters and it remained all Lakers’ from there. The Red Dragons were allowed just eight shots during the concluding 30 minutes, all of which were misfired, blocked or denied by the talents of Alana Iacovissi. Meanwhile on offense, the Lakers exploded with six more goals after the aforementioned conversion from Greene.
Cassidy Croce capped off the authoritative 9-2 win with her 24th goal of the season and the Lakers moved to 7-4 on the season.
The Lakers built upon their dominant homestand on Wednesday, April 8, dominating the visiting Buffalo State Bengals in a 17-4 victory.
The Lakers got off to an ultra-quick start, as Hill used a screen from Addison Costello to elude the defense and then find the back of the net, putting the Lakers up 1-0 just 38 seconds into the game.
The Bengals then tied it up 1-1 following a man-down goal from Kaylee Cadez, although the Lakers remained unfazed and tacked on four more goals to close out the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw much of the same domination, with Costello collecting her second of three goals of the day just a minute in. Costello came down with a high pass from Greene and quickly sniped it past Bengals’ goalie Brielle Lum, putting the Lakers up 6-1.
The team took a 11-2 lead after the second quarter concluded, highlighted by efficiency on offense and aggressiveness on defense. The wealth was shared, as six different players scored at least once between the opening 30 minutes.
The Lakers emphasized their elite power play unit in the final two quarters as Croce found the back of the net on two different man-up advantages. Hill also grabbed her third and fourth goals of the game, while Madison Wood put the finishing touches on a 17-4 victory with a conversion of her own.
On the defensive side, the Lakers allowed the Bengals just eight shots, with Iacovissi fending off two of them. Sophia Diaz was put in as relief in the final period, successfully saving attempts from the Bengals.
After a dominant homestand, the Lakers (8-4) look to keep their flawless SUNYAC record alive when they hit the road to Plattsburgh State for a matchup with the Cardinals (2-9, 0-5 SUNYAC) on Wednesday, April 11 at 12 p.m.
