POTSDAM, N.Y. – Oswego’s men’s soccer suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Clarkson Golden Knights in their regular season opener on Monday night. 

After a scoreless first half of the match, the Golden Knights broke the seal at 53:39. Brodie Smith lined one from just above the penalty arc low and to the left of Oswego goalie Kyle Rose to give them the 1-0 advantage, a lead they would not look back on.

The Golden Knights continued to control much of the offensive possession throughout the first half into much of the second half, outshooting the Lakers 16-4. Clarkson put five of those attempts on target, while Oswego recorded two shots on goal.

The Lakers looked to respond in the 60th minute when TJ Tanner created an opportunity and fired a shot toward the Clarkson goal, although opposing keeper Ian Burgos was there to make the save and keep Oswego off the board.

Oswego continued to search for an equalizer in the late stages, but Clarkson kept their offensive pressure afloat. On the flipside, their defense was too much too handle as they shut down Oswego with ease. 

With just over a minute remaining, the home squad put the game out of reach. Clarkson’s Gavin Jell found teammate Paul Rolland, who found the back of the net to double the Golden Knights’ advantage to secure the 2-0 victory.

Oswego’s goalkeeper Kyle Rose made two saves while allowing the same amount of goals, whereas Clarkson’s Ian Burgos claimed the shutout win, the first in his collegiate career. Clarkson finished the match with 14 fouls to Oswego’s 12, while both teams recorded five corner kicks apiece.

The Lakers return to the Port City on Friday for their home opener against SUNY Poly.
