Women’s lacrosse downs Oneonta, makes return to SUNYAC championship
After historically securing their first ever SUNYAC title last season, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team will have a chance to repeat the same result.
The Lakers, on home turf, clinched a bid to the SUNYAC championship following their authoritative 15-4 semifinal win over SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, April 29. In the midst of an explosive all-around performance, senior Alexis Hill led the charge with five goals while goalie Alana Iacovissi was held comfortable in net with three saves over 60 minutes.
The Lakers fully controlled the tempo in the first half, with Hill burying the game’s first goal before the team then outscored the Red Dragons by a margin of 10-1. A pair of the goals – courtesy of junior Cassidy Croce and Hill – came during man-up opportunities. Croce scored four minutes and 36 seconds into the game, where an excellent display of team ball movement transitioned into fancy stickwork in front of the net, followed by a snipe past the weakside of Oneonta goalie Margot Haring.
Addison Costello collected a hat trick soon after the second quarter commenced, underlining the early tenacity that the Lakers held. The sophomore’s first goal of the game, and the team’s fourth, came as she showed her quickness off of a free shot, rushing to the net and burying it past Haring.
The Lakers possessions started strongly all throughout the first half, too, as they controlled 10 draws while also driving a pair of clears. On the defensive side, they allowed the Red Dragons just two shots throughout the first 30 minutes.
Oneonta entered the second half in the face of a 10-goal deficit, and trimmed it to eight when Ava Fitzsimons carved out two unanswered goals. As for the Lakers, they were held scoreless in a quarter for the first time since March 18, when SUNY Brockport did not allow a single goal throughout the third quarter.
The final frames did not see as much volume from the Lakers as in the first half, yet the dominance remained noticeable. They outscored the Red Dragons 4-1, with three of the scores coming during the power play. The lone goal from their opposition was netted by Lindsey Townes, who had scored the team’s first goal of the game earlier in the second period. The game was then put away with a goal from Hill.
Aubriana Greene and Noelle Smith ended as the team’s two biggest defensive beneficiaries with four and three ground balls, respectively, while Sadie Zemanick, Hill and Greene forced two turnovers each.
The Lakers have outscored the Red Dragons 24-6 between the last two meetings, with their most recent result coming in the form of a 9-2 win on April 3. The two are now at an even 19-19 historically, with the Lakers holding a six-game win streak that dates back to April of 2023.
Up next for the team is a shot at glory and a two-peat at the SUNYAC championship. The Britt Howard-led squad will clash with Cortland – which downed SUNY New Paltz 15-2 on Wednesday – in a rematch of last year’s title game.
The Lakers emerged victorious in the 2025 rendition, 12-8, thanks to four goals from then-junior Hill. With a 2026 team that will be riding into Saturday with 11 consecutive victories, the Lakers look to repeat their success on May 2 at 1 p.m. on Laker Turf.
