Oswego State men’s swimmer Zach Brown breaks Oneonta pool record

The Oswego State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons in their first meet of the season.

The meet kicked off with a 200-yard medley relay, and the Lakers team with Matt Dambra, Jake Sarnowski, Jackson Vignona, and Zach Brown were victorious with a time of 1:43.64. Likewise, the women’s Lakers team of Izzy Dague, Emily Lotito, Abby Hinman, and Alexia Lemus won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:01.10.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle came up next, and Dambra finished second in the contest, finishing at a time of 1:52.83. Right behind him on the team were Ryan Liedka, who finished at a time of 2:01.17 in fifth and Ryan Murphy at a time of 2:03.16 who placed sixth. Dague won the women’s 200 freestyle, finishing at a time of 2:08.91. Chloe Brown placed fourth in the contest, with a time of 2:16.77.

The women’s team swept in the 50-yard freestyle, with Lemus and Aurora Jarvie both touching the wall at 27.27. Mckenna Briggs finished third, with a time of 27.39. They also swept the Red Dragons in the 100-yard freestyle, with Jayna Laferriere finishing first with a time of 58.07. Briggs was right behind her, at a time of 1:00.23, and Jarvie finished third with a time of 1:00.36.

Both the men’s and women’s teams won the 100-yard IM, with Zach Brown winning it for the men with a time of 55.96. Nathan Ratta Vine finished fourth in the contest with a time of 1:00.86 and Jake Sarnowski finished fifth with a time of 1:01.13. Laferriere took the women’s 100-yard IM with a time of 1:08.65. Fion Hon finished fourth with a time of 1:10.42 and Abby Hinman finished sixth with a time of 1:15.37.

Dambra finished second in the men’s 100-yard backstroke, finishing .42 of a second behind the first place finisher. Dambra had a time of 56.81. Dague won both of her individual events, winning the women’s 100-yard backstroke at a time of 1:05.36. 

The story of the day came from Brown, as he placed first in and broke the Men’s 100-yard breaststroke pool record with a time of 59.71, .15 faster than the previous. Ratta Vine finished third in the contest, finishing with a time of 1:05.99. The women’s team also won their 100-yard breaststroke, with Lotito finishing first with a time of 1:16.89. Briggs was right behind her in second, finishing with a time of 1:17.01.

The women finished the day winning the final event: the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Maura Waite, Jarvie, Lemus and Laferriere finished at a time of 1:47.65.

The Lakers women’s team beat the Red Dragons by a score of 128-86 while the men’s team lost by a score of 72-106.

Brown broke the pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke and won himself SUNYAC men’s swimmer of the week.

The Lakers have a short break before heading out to face Clarkson University on Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
