Oswego State men’s lacrosse loses first SUNYAC games

The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team endured their first SUNYAC loss of the season, falling to the SUNY Geneseo Knights by a score of 5-15.

The only goal scored in the first period came from the Knights, giving them a 1-0 lead going into the second. Gavin Elston scored for the Lakers early in the second period, with an assist from Max Brodman. The Knights responded with five straight goals to grab a commanding 6-1 lead. With little under three minutes remaining in the half, Elston scored his second goal of the match, bringing the score to 6-2.

Elston scored to complete his hat trick at 8:06 of the third quarter, but the Knights scored three more goals to go ahead 9-3. Chris Schmidt scored first in the fourth period with an assist from Liam Sexton, but the Knights kept up their offensive dominance and added five more goals. For the Lakers, Jack Delany scored a late goal, but it was not enough to overturn their lead. Geneseo won by a score of 15-5 to conclude the game.

Elston led the day with three goals, while Brodman and Sexton both led the team in assists with one apiece. Aiden Kenyon would end the game with 16 saves.

There are some bright spots despite the loss as the Lakers showed resilience by playing hard the whole game. They fought on despite being several goals behind and were successful in scoring a couple goals in the second half. This tenacity will help them in upcoming games since it demonstrates that they have a never-say-die mentality and will play until the very end.

However, the Lakers also suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on April 26, losing 22-5 in a one-sided game. This marked their second SUNYAC loss of the season.

The Lakers found themselves down very early in the first period, as the Red Dragons outscored the Lakers 9-1. The only goal of the period came from Sexton with just over two minutes remaining.

Both sides scored three goals in the second quarter as the contest became more level. Elston, Sexton and Connor Aspinal scored the goals for Oswego, while Brodman contributed to two of them. Cortland stayed solidly in front, and their lead grew.

The Red Dragons outscored the Lakers 7-1 in the third period, Jason Dongelewic scored the sole goal for Oswego, but it was not enough to start a comeback. Cortland tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter to finish the game.

Sexton led the day in goals with two, Brodman led the team in assists with two and Kenyon ended the game with 12 saves.

Although the Lakers outcome was disappointing, there is the same silver lining from the game against SUNY Geneseo. In the second half against the Red Dragons, they showed some grit by scoring a couple goals. However, as they get ready for their last game of the season, they will need to immediately reorganize and put this defeat behind them.

Despite these losses, the Lakers still sit in a respectable third place in the SUNYAC standings, with one regular season game remaining against the SUNY Potsdam Bears, who have been eliminated from playoff contention. The Lakers will be hoping to bounce back from their recent losses and finish the season on a high note.

The game against the Bears will be on April 29, the game is scheduled for 1 p.m in Potsdam.
