Oswego State women’s soccer remains undefeated in SUNYAC play

The Oswego State women’s soccer team traveled to face the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Sept. 23.  The Lakers controlled the ball for most of the game, consistently getting opportunities to put the ball in the net, but the Bears stopped them at every chance, leaving the score at a 0-0 tie.

The Lakers dominated the first half with an aggressive offense, tallying nine shots compared to the Bears’ two. However, the Bears’ defense, led by their goalkeeper, stood firm and stopped every attempt by the Lakers. The Bears had six saves in the first half.

As the game transitioned into the second half, the playing field became muddier, and the rain made its presence known on the field. Despite the Lakers’ continued offensive pressure, the Bears’ defense still stood strong and the Lakers were unable to score.

It’s important to note that this was an extremely competitive matchup. If either team took their foot off the gas even for a second, the outcome would be different.  The Lakers ended the game with 21 shots total, 13 of them being on goal.  They went on to lead the day in every statistical category other than fouls and saves.

Katie Delgrosso led the team in shots with five, and three of them were on goal.  Amber McDermott was close behind her, with four shots on the day, and three of them also being on goal.  Goalkeeper Perri Anderson left the game with four saves as well.

The Lakers also traveled to face the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Sept. 27. It was a back and forth contest, but the Lakers were able to pull out a win in the dying minutes of the game, winning 1-0.  This brings their record to 4-1-3 on the season.

The Lakers dominated the first half, capitalizing on foul trouble from the Golden Eagles, keeping the pressure on their side.  The Lakers outshot the Golden Eagles 7-3 in the first half, however, the Golden Eagles did more with their shots, with all three being on goal.  Anderson deflected every single shot, notching three saves in the half, and the score remained 0-0.

The second half was a lot more back-and-forth, with neither team able to keep the ball for too long.  The Lakers were outshot five to six in the half, and outshot on goal three to four. The game seemed to be all but over until just over the 88-minute mark, when Alora Miller scored her first career goal for the Lakers.  Anderson would also be the hero of the day, saving the seven shots she faced.

The Lakers will face the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, a team the Lakers were 1-1 against last season.  The Cardinals are on a winning drought, and have not won since their second contest of the season on Sept. 3.  The Lakers are hoping to capitalize on the Cardinals woes as they return home on Sept. 30 to face Plattsburgh State at 1 p.m.
