Oswego State volleyball begin SUNYAC play against SUNY Cortland

After a long break, the Oswego State volleyball team came back home to face the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons to kick off SUNYAC play for the Lakers. The Lakers unfortunately did not put up much of a fight other than in the second set, as the Lakers fell to the Red Dragons 0-3.

The first set was a dominating performance by the Red Dragons, as they jumped to a 6-1 lead.  The Lakers, led by Cara Simplicio, were able to claw their way back into the game, narrowing the lead to just 11-7.  Sadly, this was the closest the Lakers were to gaining a lead in the set, as the Red Dragons pummeled the Lakers by a score of 25-10.

The second set was a much more back-and-forth contest, as neither team was able to establish a massive lead against one another.  The Red Dragons quickly started this set off jumping to a score of 3-1, but the story of this set was the Lakers’ ability to battle and stay competitive.

The Red Dragons kept the lead throughout most of the set, until the Lakers were finally able to control the set, jumping to a 20-19 lead against the Red Dragons.  The highest lead the Lakers had in this set was 22-21, but after this, the Red Dragons went on to score four unanswered points and they went on to win the set, 25-22.

The third set was eerily similar to the first set, as the Red Dragons never gave the Lakers a chance.  The Red Dragons found their footing early in the set, jumping to an 11-3 lead, and never looked back, as they beat the Lakers by a score of 25-14.

Grace Taylor led the team in kills against SUNY Cortland with eight, Nyah Dias led the team in assists with also eight, and Simplicio and Madison Gordon led the team in digs with 12 each on the day.

Overall, the Lakers move to 1-9 on the season, marking their sixth consecutive loss in a row.

Simplicio leads the team in kills on the season with 49, averaging just under 1.5 kills a set.  She also leads the team in points with 81.5, averaging over 2 points a set. Simplicio also has 89 digs this season, averaging just under 2.5 digs a set.  She also has six assists under her belt.

Kaylee Troy leads the team in digs with 120 this season, averaging well over 3.5 digs a set.  She also has 19 assists and two kills this year.

Emily Zeisler leads the team with 78 assists this season, averaging 3.25 a set. She also has 59 digs this year, and 14 kills as well.

Finally, Georgia Farry leads the team in blocks, with 25 total on the year, she averages just under a block a set.  She is also second on the team in kills, racking up 44 kills on the season.

The Lakers will head out to Canton, NY, to face Alfred State College on Sept. 30, a team the Lakers haven’t played in a decade, at 1 p.m. The Lakers will also face SUNY Canton on Sept. 30, a team they’ve beaten seven straight times, at 3 p.m.  With plenty of SUNYAC games to go, the Lakers hope to go on a winning streak and make a splash in their conference.
