Artists should not rely on autotune for vocals

Have you ever been excited to see your favorite artist live, only to discover they sound much different in person than over the radio? Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more common with the use of autotune.

Artists can put out entire albums now that have music made completely electronically and they can edit their voice to sound how they want. But when it comes time to perform live, it becomes clear that they do not have what it takes to be a singer.

A video of country singer Bailey Zimmerman (“Where It Ends”) recently went viral on TikTok of him singing his song “Rock in a Hard Place” live and his vocals were horrible. He then stitched the video and sang the verse acoustic to prove that he was just having a bad night. However, this was not the only video of him struggling to perform live.

Some artists do have the ability to sound good while recording, but when it comes to performing live, they do not have what it takes. Zimmerman proved that he does have the vocals to perform his song in his kitchen with no pressure, but he has proved multiple times that he cannot sing this song live.

Another artist with this problem is Yung Gravy (“Betty”). There were also videos of a concert of his on TikTok that showed him having no energy while performing and he did not sound like his tracks. He also responded claiming he was just having a bad night and his shows are normally much more energetic.

If you are going to pursue a career that involves you performing for people who paid money to see you, you need to put your all into your performance. These artists are making excuses for why they are unable to perform, when in reality, they might just not have what it takes.

On the flip side, there are countless artists who sound better live than they do when recording, which proves that they are passionate about what they do and that they are giving their all to their fans. There are also artists who you can see their progression for when it comes to performing live.

Olivia Rodrigo (“Jealousy, Jealousy”) is fairly new to performing and she recently went on tour for her album “Sour.” At the start of the tour, videos of her singing were all over social media and it was clear some of the songs were harder for her to perform live than when she recorded them. But as the tour went on, you could see her improving her vocals and learning how to control her voice.

This is just one example of many artists who are improving themselves for their fans. However artists like Zimmerman and Gravy are becoming more popular as they can put out an album that makes them sound great, only to turn around and put on a bad performance.

If you are going to charge fans hundreds of dollars to see you perform, you better put on a show worth watching and you better make sure your vocals sound the same, or better, than your recorded album.
