The “Triple Threat” returns for women’s soccer

The Oswego State women’s soccer team is off to a dominating start in their 2022 campaign. The Lakers are 3-0 this season and have not given up a goal yet to their opponents.

Back on Sept. 1, Oswego State pushed past Cazenovia College with a 7-0 victory and continued their success two days later with another 7-0 final against SUNY Canton. The Lakers set their sights on Houghton University Sept. 6 as the Oswego State squad hit the road.

The game finished with a 1-0 final score and featured a ball finding the twine off the foot of Maggie Riordan. Freshman Amber McDermott was credited with the assist. The midfielder has seen big minutes for head coach Brian McGrane who continues to push the program forward.

The coach enters his 15th season with the program and looks to guide the squad back into the postseason for the first time since 2016. This weekend, McGrane is eyeing his 100th win at Oswego State after gaining his 99th Tuesday evening.

Oswego State’s success has come from the offensive wonders that the team has been able to establish at the beginning of their 2022 campaign. There have been nine different scorers for the squad after three games played, and four of those players have multiple tallies in the goal column.

Nicknamed ‘The Triple Threat,’ three players have led the way in terms of offensive production and leadership in the attacking third of the pitch. Katie Delgrosso, Luigina Serrao and Graisa Madden have played well together to start up top and create problems for opposing defenses.

Delgrosso was selected on Sept. 6 as SUNYAC women’s soccer offensive player of the week. The Pearl River native leads the Lakers in points with four goals, a career high in only her second season with the squad. Although she did not find the back of the net Tuesday against Houghton, she is a bright spot in the offensive core for the Lakers.

The return of graduate students Maggie Riordan, Olivia Williams and Graisa Madden has benefitted the Lakers. The three have been able to make contributions on the box score along with in the intangible leadership and experience the three bring the squad.

Perri Anderson, a transfer from Pace University, has taken a majority of the workload in between the pipes for Oswego State. The goalkeeper has been able to manage the defensive line while also not conceding a goal in her first three games for Oswego State.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Lakers head on the road to SUNY Fredonia for the 2022 Blue Devil Classic. Oswego State will face off against Ithaca College team that started their respective season undefeated. Women’s soccer will then look ahead to Utica University on Sept. 10 who needs a solid weekend against the SUNYAC squads.

The Lakers continue their games away from Oswego on Sept. 13, as Oswego State heads east to face Hamilton College. The Lakers will return home to host Clarkson University on Sept. 17 at Laker Turf Stadium before the start of conference play the following Wednesday versus SUNY Brockport.
