Women’s soccer looks to bounce back after first loss of season

The Oswego State women’s soccer program continues to push on into the 2022 season. The 3-2-1 Lakers squad came off a disappointing 4-1 loss to Hamilton College on Sept. 13. The Continentals were able to string together four straight goals before Brianna Winkler cleared the clean sheet in the final 10 minutes.

Winkler has established herself in the offense in her rookie campaign with the Lakers. The freshman forward has seen minutes off the sideline every match this season. The Laker has three goals in 224 minutes played in green and gold with six shots on target.

The offensive production has tapered off since the first three contests. Graduate student Maggie Riordan pieced together back-to-back goals last week versus Houghton University and Ithaca College. ‘The Triple Threat’ of Katie Delgrosso, Graisa Madden and Luigina Serrao have all been kept off the box score since the Sept. 3 contest against SUNY Canton.

Lakers head coach Brian McGrane hit the 100 win milestone with the team’s victory against Canton.

On the defensive side of the ball, Perri Anderson has put up big minutes in net. The transfer from Pace University made a huge impact right off the bat after zero goals against in four games played. The sophomore has recorded 12 saves with 10 of those saves from Tuesday’s nonconference game.

Women’s soccer has kept opponents off the score sheet this season with three shutouts to start the year. Since then, Oswego State has given up six goals and only produced two goals on the offensive side of the field.

Two of those contests were at the Fredonia Tournament this past weekend on SUNY Fredonia’s campus. The Lakers were handed a 1-2 defeat to Ithaca College Sept. 9 but the team rebounded with a 0-0 tie against Utica University.

Oswego State was unable to put one past the Pioneers defense with three shots on goal in the second half. The Lakers could not convert on three corner kicks or free kicks. Anderson and the defensive line stopped any offense generated by Utica University.

Oswego State welcomes the Golden Knights of Clarkson University, a squad that has not lost this season. The Liberty League team is 5-0-1 entering the nonconference matchup. Clarkson University is 1-0-1 against SUNYAC opponents with a 2-0 final against SUNY Potsdam and a scoreless tie against the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland. The Golden Knights have also only conceded two goals this season with two shutouts in their previous contests.

The archives favor the Lakers with an overall program record of 26-4 against the Golden Knights. However, Clarkson University has taken the previous two matchups that both occurred prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lakers will look to change that trend at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Laker Turf Stadium.

Past the weekend, SUNYAC play will be the next challenge for Oswego State. Based on the conference’s coaches’ preseason poll, the Lakers rank seventh. SUNY Brockport will be the first conference opponent to play Oswego State this season.

The Golden Eagles were ranked sixth by the SUNYAC women’s soccer coaches. The team is 1-2-2 so far this season with their lone win coming against Houghton University, a team Oswego State beat 1-0 back on Sept. 6. Oswego State could take advantage on offense as SUNY Brockport has conceded more goals than the Golden Eagles have been able to produce in 2022.

The Lakers will look to put together a complete game this weekend to kick start some success this weekend heading into the crucial conference matchup next week. The Laker Turf will be the home of a double header Saturday evening with men’s soccer kicking off their conference play.
