Laker Quick Recap: Men’s Soccer vs. SUNY Cortland

The Oswego State men’s soccer dropped a SUNYAC game to SUNY Cortland by a score of 5-2. The Lakers battled back in the second half to tally two goals to break the Red Dragon shutout. SUNY Cortland’s Jack Coleman completed the hat-trick to push the SUNY Cortland team to its first conference win of the season.

Pregame Notes:

  • Oswego State enters the contest with 2-4-1 overall record. The Lakers are 0-1-1 in SUNYAC play this season.
  • SUNY Cortland brings a 4-3-2 overall record into the contest. The Red Dragons are 0-0-2 in SUNYAC play this year.
  • Both teams are searching for their first SUNYAC win of the 2022 campaign.
  • This contest is the rematch of the 2021 SUNYAC Championship. The Lakers lost to the Red Dragons by a score of 6-0.

First Half:

  • The Lakers gained possession and control in the first ten minutes of the contest. Oswego State was able to get the ball in the attacking third.
  • First corner kick for Oswego State. SUNY Cortland able to defend the set piece.
  • Kyle Gehnrich is awarded a direct free kick for Oswego State. The player sailed the ball over the net.
  • With 35 minutes remaining, Jason Wuytack rung the bar from outside the 18 yard box. SUNY Cortland goalkeeper Braden Melveney deflects that ball.
  • Momentum swung when Jack Coleman scored on the counter attack for SUNY Cortland. Mateo Marra was credited with the assist. Coleman got his third of the season after pushing the ball past D’Arpino.
  • Roughly five minutes later, Marra scored his own goal to push the lead to 2-0. Matt Shultz received the assist and SUNY Cortland extended the lead.
  • Coleman scored his second goal of the contest two minutes and 44 seconds later after connecting with Marco Cottone.
  • Riley Williams rung the post after a SUNY Cortland corner kick.
  • Ryan Young entered the contest for Oswego State. The player returned back after not playing since Ithaca College game on Sept. 11.
  • Coleman would bury once against for the Red Dragons for his hat trick around the 38 minute mark. Marra would pick up his second assist on the day.
  • Matt Shultz flicked a ball over D’Arpino for the fifth SUNY Cortland goal of the game. Shultz secured his sixth goal of the 2022 campaign.

  • SUNY CORTLAND: Braden Melveney (2 saves on 2 shots)

Second Half:

  • GOALS:
  • OSWEGO STATE: Kiernan Gilroy @ 67:09 from Zach Ward
  • OSWEGO STATE: Brendan Murphy @ 70:47
  • Andre Bourjolly took over goalkeeping responsibilities for Oswego State at the start of the half.
  • The Lakers pushed the pace of play. No shots have been on target yet as the SUNY Cortland defense stood strong.
  • Caleb Munski was awarded a penalty kick. Melveney made the save on the shot.
  • Oswego State got on the board thanks to Kiernan Gilroy. Zach Ward found Gilroy in the middle of the six yard box. Gilroy is credited with his third of the season.
  • Minutes later, Brendan Murphy buried a goal in the lower left corner off a direct free kick. Murphy tallied his first goal of the season.

  • SUNY CORTLAND: Braden Melveney (2 saves on 5 shots)

Post-Game:

The Oswego State Lakers battled back to on the score board in the second half. This is the first time this season the Lakers scored in a loss. The return of Ryan Young on the field showed in the team’s play during the majority of the second half. Oswego State drops to 2-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

A Look Ahead:

The Oswego State men’s soccer team heads on the road Sept. 28 to battle Utica University in a non-conference matchup. The contest is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on the Utica University campus.
