‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Eric Dane dies at 53 after ALS diagnosis

“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” star Eric Dane has died at the age of 53 from ALS.

Dane, who had been battling ALS since his diagnosis in April of last year, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19. His family confirmed his death in a statement to People magazine, stating he was “surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane’s career began in the early ‘90s playing small roles on shows such as “Saved by the Bell” and “Married…with Children.” In 1998, he landed his first recurring role on the fantasy drama “Charmed” as millionaire Jason Dean. Dane went on to star in multiple films and shows, including his first major film appearance in 2000’s “The Basket”.

In 2005, he guest starred as Dr. Mark Sloan in an episode of the popular medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” After being greatly received by audiences, he became a series regular until his departure in the show’s 12th season. Dane then gained notoriety for his performance as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s “Euphoria.” He was praised for his ability to portray such a heinous character.

Dane met his ex-wife, actress Rebecca Greyheart, while filming “Grey Lady” together. They had two daughters together before separating in February of 2018.

Dane interestingly partnered with Netflix for his last appearance on film in their “Famous Last Words” series. The show sits a notable figure down for an interview, and the interview is released posthumously. Primatologist Jane Goodall is the only other celebrity to participate in the show.

Many of Dane’s friends and colleagues sent out tributes following his death.  “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star Patrick Demspey spoke about Dane in an interview with Virgin Radio UK, calling him “such a joy to work with.” “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner and creator Shonda Rimes spoke about Dane in an Instagram post. “We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship and humanity he shared with us for so many years. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work,” Rimes wrote.

Many of Dane’s other co-stars spoke out after his passing. Paul Walter Houser, who starred alongside Dane in “Americana,”  took to Instagram to talk about his experience with Dane. “I love you, man. I wish we had more time. Enjoy the arms of Father God. I’ll see you again,” Houser wrote.

Dane leaves behind his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. At the time of his passing, he was in a relationship with filmmaker Jannel Shirtcliff. Dane’s presence can be felt throughout his work, and will be missed by his friends, family and fans.
