Get your sequined tops and blonde wigs ready! The beloved Disney Channel original show “Hannah Montana” turns 20 this year and to celebrate, Disney with Unwell Network is producing an anniversary special.
“Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” will feature Hannah Montana herself, Miley Cyrus, in a sit-down interview with Alex Cooper, podcast host and owner of Unwell Network, to talk about memories and beloved moments of the show. Many of the iconic sets will be recreated, like the Stewart living room as well as Montana’s closet. The anniversary episode will stream on Disney+ on March 24.
“Hannah Montana” will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection,” Cyrus told Disney+ Press. “The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”
Like Cyrus said, the legacy of “Hannah Montana” for young fans has carried well into their adulthood. The news of the special broke and many Millennial and Generation Z fans flocked to the internet to give their speculations of what the episode will entail.
Because of Cooper’s involvement in the special as well as the confirmed interview, many fans believe the bulk of the episode will be the interview. There have been no confirmed performances by Cyrus but fans hope to see at least a few or small clips of beloved classic songs like “The Best of Both Worlds,” “Hoedown Throwdown,” “Life’s What You Make It” and “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home.”
Cyrus’s relationship with her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, seems to be estranged so it seems he will not make an appearance on the special, despite his important role as Miley Stewart’s father. Other cast members are sure to appear but there has been no confirmation yet.
The brief teaser trailer revealed very little: a car pulls up, its license plate reading “HM20.” A pair of boots, implied to be Cyrus’s, step out before the screen cuts to the special’s title and release date.
While the announcement of the special has generated significant excitement, Cooper’s role in the project has also sparked discussion among fans. Although she has built a strong reputation through her work on “Call Her Daddy,” her interviewing style at times leans more toward casual conversation than compelling journalism, a tone that suits certain episodes but in other cases can feel underwhelming.
Nevertheless, excitement for the special continues to outweigh any concerns. Fans of “Hannah Montana,” many of whom grew up alongside the series, have eagerly expressed their enthusiasm online, sharing favorite memories, episodes and hopes for what the anniversary episode might include.
For Millennial and Generation Z viewers especially, the show represents a nostalgic piece of their childhood, making the celebration feel both personal and long overdue. Regardless of the format or what ultimately makes it into the special, the overwhelming reaction has been one of anticipation, as audiences look forward to revisiting a show that has remained culturally relevant for two decades.
