‘Wicked: One Wonderful Night’ pays tribute to past influences, celebrates film

“Wicked” fans, the time is almost here! The “Wicked: For Good” release is less than two weeks away and the press tour has begun. To celebrate the beloved musical-turned-movie series, NBC put on a live special on Nov. 6 called “Wicked: One Wonderful Night.” Almost all of the cast shared the stage for an hour and a half to put on the most magical concert for fans.

Everyone involved in the making of “Wicked” has put so much love, care and passion into the project which has been evident in the press tour and on the stage of NBC’s special. The cast’s chemistry is undeniable as Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, opened up with the opening track “No One Mourns the Wicked” with Bowen Yang screaming the iconic line, “Look, it’s Glinda!”

Grande’s angelic voice sang as she descended in the iconic bubble that looked identical to the stage production’s bubble. Yang interrupted the performance to joke about paying for “the bubble experience.” These comedic moments of the concert show the playfulness and comfortable energy the cast has created with one another.

When the opening song ended, the rest of the cast and Director Jon M. Chu came out to introduce the concert and speak on the moving effect “Wicked” has had on pop culture. “The global impact this movie has had has been nothing short of magical,” Michelle Yeoh, who portrays Madame Morrible gracefully said.

The concert gave everything fans needed to hold themselves over until the release of the second part with behind the scenes moments and even performances of songs that will be in the second movie. Cynthia Erivo’s (Elphaba) voice boomed across the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles during her performance of “The Wizard and I.”

Erivo has always been known in the theatre community as an unworldly talent but now her gift has been center stage in the conversations surrounding “Wicked.” Erivo’s rendition of “Defying Gravity” has landed her on the same level as the first Broadway Elphaba, Idina Menzel.

Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero, could not perform in the concert so Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang and Marissa Bode performed Bailey’s iconic song “Dancing Through Life.” They did a great job bouncing off one another and sharing the stage without outshining each other.

Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard) was characteristically himself in the skit moments of the concert. He shared funny moments of things he stole off set and even took a quiz on which “Wicked” character he was most like. Not surprisingly, when he turned the phone to reveal his answer, the Wizard popped up.

Grande and Erivo love their fans and show so much kindness to the “Wicked” fans both old and young. After a beautiful montage of fans sharing their love of “Wicked,” Grande called up a young fan named Remy to help her perform “Popular.” Remy adorably and quietly played Grande’s Elphaba by sitting on the bed in Elphaba’s iconic hat and even the adorable glasses Elphaba has on in the movie. Remy’s moment on stage ended with a gift from Grande and a hug.

Erivo and Grande’s connection has truly been the star of “Wicked.” The pair have performed a few times together since the first film’s release, but the two that stood out the most were their rendition of “For Good” and their cover of “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again.”

“For Good” is the big ending of “Wicked” and drives the plot of the musical: the bond between Glinda and Elphaba. Grande and Erivo performed the song at the Gershwin Theater, home to the musical “Wicked.” Stephen Schwartz, the writer of the musical, played the piano as the pair sang beautifully together. Even Mendel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Elphaba and Glinda, came out to help Grande and Erivo finish the lyrics, “I have been changed for good.”

Erivo and Grande’s cover of “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again” was the ultimate theater kid moment. Their voices blended together as they harmonized on the final line, “Happy days are here again.” The cover was originally performed by the iconic Barbara Streisand and Judy Garland.

This performance pays homage to Garland, the original Dorothy in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” The cast and creative team of “Wicked” have done an excellent job of discussing and remembering the impact “The Wizard of Oz” has had on popular culture.

If fans were not excited before about part two, they definitely are now after this special “Wicked: One Wonderful Night.” The era of “Wicked” is slowly coming to an end but what a beautiful journey it has been for both the cast and fans of the beloved show.
