‘Revenge of the Sith’ returns to theaters 20 years after initial release

“This is where the fun begins.”

The lights begin to dim as Hayden Christensen appears on the screen to introduce the 20th anniversary screening of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005).

“I hope you all enjoy watching Anakin’s journey to the dark side,” Christensen said. “Watching Ewan and I battle it out on the big screen. So now let’s get to the movie because this is where the fun begins.”

The Syracuse Regal was packed with people waiting to see the legendary villain’s origin story come to life in theaters again. Fans of all ages were there, with parents who grew up watching the movie now sharing it with their kids.

The atmosphere could not have been better. There seemed to be an unspoken acknowledgement that talking was allowed, as friends and family whispered amongst one another during iconic lines and moments.

“I am the Senate!” everyone shouted as Palpatine revealed his true colors of ruling the Republic.

As someone who had only seen “Revenge of the Sith” at home, seeing it on a big screen with a large audience solidified the power of the movie. People dressing up in cosplay as their favorite characters or wearing shirts with iconic phrases and pictures set an energy amongst the audience.

“Revenge of the Sith” is arguably one of the most loved and greatest “Star Wars” movies of all time. A heartbreaking look at how one becomes evil, it was a perfect close to the prequel trilogy.

While Christensen’s performance in the prequels was heavily hated on during their releases, newer fans have fallen in love with his charm and kindness off-screen.

Christensen outdoes himself in “Revenge of the Sith.” His shift in acting when Anakin finally turns to the dark side is mesmerizing, making audience members still sympathize with the character while also breaking their hearts.

Natalie Portman’s acting as Padmé pairs beautifully with Christensen. One of the best delivered lines of the film is Portman’s, “Anakin… you’re breaking my heart! You’re going down a path I can’t follow!”

Some of the CGI was fixed for the 20th anniversary edition, most notably General Grievous’ look. His battle scene with Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) was insane in theaters, watching General Grievous pull out four lightsabers.

“Revenge of the Sith” cannot be talked about without mentioning one of the biggest fight scenes in “Star Wars” history. Anakin and Obi-Wan’s final battle takes place on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, where Anakin is burned and his legs are chopped off, taking on his final form as Darth Vader.

The battle is the movie’s big climax as Anakin’s darkness takes on the physical manifestation of fighting his beloved master, Obi-Wan.

Mustafar becomes the birthplace of the greatest villain in movie history. The theater was silent and fans held back tears as Obi-Wan yelled at Anakin.

“It was said that you would *destroy* the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!” Obi-Wan yells.

“I HATE YOU!” Anakin desperately cries.

“You were my brother, Anakin!”

The impact “Star Wars” has had on generations and the movie-loving community was apparent at the screenings of the 20th anniversary of “Revenge of the Sith.” It will not die off, but continue as parents, friends and family share the legacy of this iconic film.
