Oswego State baseball drops three-straight games, still sit in third place in SUNYAC

Oswego State men’s baseball is looking to get back to winning ways after suffering three losses in a row. This past weekend they beat St. John Fisher University (SJFU) just once in the three-game series. More recently, the Lakers lost to nationally-ranked Ithaca College.

Oswego managed to win one game against St. John Fisher University. This game was the first game of the three-game series. This was a closely contested battle as the early innings of the game showed both teams fighting for the lead. SJFU struck first, scoring a run in the very first inning, but the Lakers took away the lead in the second inning. Both teams scored three runs a piece in the third inning putting the score at 5-4 Lakers.

The scoring did not pick up again until the sixth inning. Oswego scored two runs while the Cardinals only scored one making the score 7-5 through six innings. After this however, Oswego would open up, scoring five runs in the eighth inning. The Cardinals attempted a late game and ended up scoring four runs in the ninth and final inning but it would not be enough.

The final score of the game was 12-9 Lakers. Top performers in this game were third baseman Frank Levanti and first baseman Owen Parliment. Levanti would finish the day 2-2, scoring three runs and also managing to draw three walks. Parliment would bat 2-5 scoring three runs and also recording an RBI.

Unfortunately, the next two games would not be as successful as the first. In the second game of the three-game series the Lakers were down right from the start as the Cardinals would take a 5-3 lead after three innings and the Lakers were not able to catch up and the final score was 15-7 Cardinals. Even with the loss there were still some solid performances on the hitting side.

First baseman Jacob Levine would be most successful at the plate in game two as he would go four for five including a home run as well as hitting two RBIs and scoring a run. Another good performance was from Parliment who was the designated hitter for this game and went 1-4 with a home run and a walk hitting two RBIs and also scoring a run.

The final game showed Oswego taking the worse of its two losses from the weekend as SJFU beat Oswego 20-8. The Lakers were completely dominated by the Cardinal offense in this game despite notable performances from first baseman Jacob Levine and third baseman Blake VanDreason. Levine and VanDreason would both go 2-3 in this game including hitting a pair of home runs and scoring two runs as well as hitting for two RBIs each.

After the two losses in a row the Lakers attempted to get back on track by taking on nationally-ranked Ithaca College. That was not the case this past Tuesday however despite having a 1-0 lead early in the game, the Lakers would be outplayed by Ithaca. With a 1-0 lead going into the third Oswego looked to continue to shut out Ithaca. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Ithaca scored runs in each of the next five innings and four of them would be multi-run innings. Oswego would falter in this game when it came to the bats and they would end up only scoring three more runs setting a final score of 12-4 in favor of Ithaca College.

Jamer Helani had the most notable performance in this game as he would go 2-3 with a home run and a walk and would also score a run and have an RBI.

Oswego has had ups and downs this season. They had an eight-game winningstreak recently and were doing well to keep their win percentage above .500. Coming off these three losses in a row, the Lakers now find themselves 13-14 and coming up against conference opponent SUNY Plattsburgh. Plattsburgh has some momentum as they have won their past four games in a row and have won six of their last seven. Oswego looks to halt them in their tracks and improve their conference record even more as they push towards SUNYACS.
