Twelve upcoming movies to add to your watchlist this year

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”

The first two months of 2023 have already set the exciting tone for movies this year with titles like “Infinity Pool” and “Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania” hitting theaters. Here are some projects that should be on people’s radars for the rest of 2023.

“Scream VI”

The  iconic horror franchise “Scream” once again returns to the big screen on March 10 with “Scream VI.” This film, which is the sequel to its 2022 counterpart, follows the two sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera, “Vida”) and Tara (Jenna Ortega, “Wednesday”) fighting off Ghostface in New York City. 

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is bringing to life the popular role-playing game on March 31. The action-fantasy film has a lot to show with its underdog characters beating the odds. 

“Tetris”

“Tetris”  may seem like an odd fit at first but this thriller and drama-filled film is sure to shock those who watch on March 31. The story follows Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton, “Rocketman”) and the downright unbelievable yet true story of how this iconic video game came to be, involving traveling to the Soviet Union and teaming up with inventor Alexey Pazhitnov (Nikita Efremov, “A Good Man”) during the Cold War.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie”

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is bringing home childhood nostalgia on April 7. Watch as Mario (Chris Pratt, “The Tomorrow War”) with the help of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy, “The Menu”) once again face off in an epic battle against Bowser (Jack Black, “Weird”) in his plans to conquer the world.

“Beau is Afraid”

“Beau is Afraid”  is great for those who enjoyed director Ari Aster’s (“Midsommar”)  previous films which delve into the weird and wacky. This film follows a paranoid Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) and his journey to get home on April 21. 

“The Little Mermaid”

“The Little Mermaid” is continuing Disney’s trend of making 2D real life with a thrilling new look for this classic tale. Watch as Halle Bailey (“Ariel”) sings her heart out on May 26.

“Spider-Man: Across the Universe”

“Spider-Man:  Across the Universe” is the exciting upcoming sequel to Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Join Miles Morales (Shameik Moore, “Dope”) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld, “Hawkeye”) as they embark on another action-filled adventure exploring the cosmos on June 2.

“Barbie”

“Barbie” has taken the internet by storm ever since its original announcement. Greta Gerwig shows off her skills in the director’s chair once again after her exciting adaptation of “Little Women” on  July 31. Watchers are excited to see  Barbie (Margot Robbie, “Dreamland”) and Ken’s (Ryan Gosling, “The Gray Man”) story. 

“Oppenheimer”

“Oppenheimer” follows the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy, “Inception”) as he works to create the Atomic bomb in this historical drama on July 12. This is sure to be on the list for fans of Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”).

“Dune: Part Two”

“Dune: Part Two” is returning for those who enjoyed the first installment of this series. Watch as Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet, “Bones and All”) seeks revenge with the help of his friends in this sci-fi adventure on Nov. 3.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” heads to theaters as the long-awaited prequel to the beloved book and movie franchise “Hunger Games” on Nov. 10. Watch a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth, “Billy the Kid”) and his journey before becoming the tyrannical president we all know.

“The Color Purple”

“The Color Purple” goes from stage to film again as the musical adaptation of the original Alice Walker novel on Dec. 20. This musical drama is sure to hit the hearts of watchers as it tells the story of Celie, a young African-American woman who is living in the south during the 1900s.
