Laker Hockey Men's Hockey Sports

Laker Gameday Preview: No. 12 Men’s hockey at SUNY Fredonia

After their second-straight shutout, the Oswego State men’s hockey team will conclude its western New York road trip with an away game at SUNY Fredonia on Saturday night.

SUNY Fredonia is just two years removed from taking Oswego State out of the SUNYAC Championship semifinals, ending the Lakers’ season after not receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Last season, the season series between the two teams was split.

In Fredonia, the Blue Devils came out on top 3-2 after the game-winning goal from Ethan Kirbis in the third period. Oswego State had just scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at two, only to lose the game a minute and four seconds later.

At Oswego, the Lakers were victorious 4-1 with two power-play goals and a short-handed goal. Max Novick had a three-point game with two goals and an assist.

David Richer played in both games, making a combined 36 saves between the two games.

Last Time Out

OSW: The Lakers earned their second-straight shutout after a 5-0 win at Buffalo State on Friday night. Travis Broughman added two goals to his team-leading seven goals. Josh Zizek, Joseph Molinaro and Carson Vance also scored for Oswego State. Zizek’s goal was on the power play, which went 1-6 during the game. The Lakers killed all four penalties it committed.

Tyler Currie, Tyson Kirkby and Vance also had multi-point nights. Currie and Kirkby both had two assists, while Vance chipped in an assist on top of his second-period goal. Richer made 21 saves, including a huge diving save in the third period to preserve his shutout.

FRE: SUNY Fredonia earned its first league win and just second overall win of the season after a 3-2 win over SUNY Cortland on Friday night. Charlie Manley had a hat-trick for the Blue Devils, scoring the middle three goals of the game. Two of his goals came on the power play. Jacob Haynes had two assists in the game. Goaltender Anton Rosén made 34 saves in the win.

Only three penalties were committed during the entire game, and all three came from SUNY Cortland. The Blue Devils had no penalties to kill and scored on two of their three man-advantage opportunities.

Players to Watch

OSW: Travis Broughman

Broughman was fourth on the team in scoring last year (13g-10a–23p) and is nearly halfway there this season with his team-leading 12 points and seven goals. The sophomore has been held pointless only twice this season–against SUNY Cortland and SUNY Geneseo–but has made up for it with three multi-point games this season, including a four-point game against SUNY Potsdam. He recorded two goals last night, one on a two-on-one breakaway with Michael Gillespie but took the shot himself and the other in the high slot. Broughman has now had two multi-point games in a row after Friday’s game and two assists in the 8-0 win over Plymouth State.

FRE: Charlie Manley

Not only does Manley lead the team with seven goals, but he recorded a natural hat trick against SUNY Cortland last night, two of which were on the power play. The senior defenseman played at Div. I Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for his freshman and sophomore seasons before transferring to SUNY Fredonia. The senior defenseman, who is also the captain, is second on the team with nine points. A truly offensive defenseman with a keen eye for scoring both on even strength and the man-advantage, watch for Manley to try to end Oswego State’s recent success.

Prediction

Once again, this is going to be a tough test for Oswego State, with SUNY Fredonia coming off its first league win, especially since the game is in Fredonia. It was two years ago, but it is definitely still in the back of some players’ minds that the Blue Devils knocked the Lakers out of the SUNYACs just a couple seasons ago. And last year’s loss in Fredonia still stings, as well.

Travis Broughman has been hot recently, finding the back of the net consistently for the Lakers. David Richer has two-straight shutouts and has really stood on his head for the Lakers.

But, SUNY Fredonia, despite a poor record, cannot be counted out. When a team has a defenseman score a natural hat-trick in a close 3-2 game, and also commit absolutely no penalties, it definitely brings confidence to a struggling squad.

Final Prediction for the game: Oswego State takes this one 4-1 with an empty net.
