Breaking Down Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ Playlist: Oct. 4

Last Friday, Oct. 4, Spotify updated its weekly “New Music Friday playlist.” This week’s edition includes another new 98 musical releases featuring new songs from chart-topping artists such as Travis Scott, Camila Cabello, Charlie Puth, Halsey or Chris Brown.

If what listeners are looking for is some tunes to get you through some late night studying, then there are multiple enjoyable options this week.

Country music duo Dan + Shay are back with their new song “10,000 Hours” featuring Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Bieber. Both Bieber and the duo teased their new release through their social media channels last Wednesday, Oct. 2. The song’s theme relates to the singer’s dedication and commitment to his spouse.

New Jersey native, singer and songwriter Charlie Puth also released a new hit. The track, titled “Cheating On You,” serves as a stand-alone at the time. Its lyrics discuss an occasion in which Puth fell in love back in the day. However, both he and his partner decided to go separate ways. Thus far, Puth has two studio albums under his belt: “Nine Track Mind” (2016) and “Voicenotes” (2018).

Lauv, the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer who peaked the charts back in 2017 with his hit single “I Like Me Better,” has come along dropping one new single per week for the past several weeks. “Sims” is the latest early release from his up and coming first studio album. Until now, he has released a total of seven tunes from what will be his first studio album. Though, fans will have to wait until March of next year, as the full album is scheduled for March 6, 2020. Lauv has one compilation album, one remix album, and two EP’s to his name.

American rapper Gnash is also back on the road with his new track “forgive.” The song currently serves as a stand-alone. With its chill guitar chords, it is sure to help listeners through those endless nights of study or the drives to and from home on the weekends.

If none of the aforementioned music styles match listeners likes and what they are looking for is maybe rap or hip-hop music, then they have plenty of choices this week.

Chris brown is back on air with his new single “Overtime.” The song pertains to Brown’s compilation “Indigo (Extended),” released last June, which serves as his 10th studio album.

Rapper Juice WRLD also dropped a new track, “Bandit,” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again. The term “bandit” is usually associated with that of a thief or a criminal. However, in this case, it seems as if it is a symbol of some kind. Further, the tune discusses the trend of stealing women they are attracted to away from the boyfriends.

If electronic music is your go-to music style, then this week comes in handy. Belgian DJ and record producer Felix De Laet, better known by his stage name Lost Frequencies, released a new single, too. “Beat Of My Heart” is the eighth single extracted from the producer’s second studio album “Alive And Feeling Fine,” which was also released Friday, Oct. 4.

If none of the previous music styles match listeners’ preferences for the week, then “The Who’s” comeback might. The English rock band is on a roll as they released a new track titled “All This Music Must Fade.” The song, which follows single “Ball And Chain,” will be part of their 12th studio album “Who,” ending their 13-year-long hiatus.
