After suffering a 3-0 shutout loss to Plattsburgh State, the Oswego women’s soccer team returned home four days later to pick up its first win in over a month.
Oswego now sits at 3-7-2 after the pair of results, having picked up its first in-conference win over SUNY Morrisville on Wednesday to move to fifth place in the SUNYAC West division.
The Lakers put up 15 shots against Plattsburgh, although all turned unsuccessful due to a strong opposing backline. The Cardinals turned defense into offense as Sydney Myers notched a goal early on, before a pair of separate players found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Lucy Starzyk made six saves, and the Lakers suffered their fifth shutout loss of the season.
Oswego completely flipped the script four days later though, as the Lakers secured a shutout win over a formidable Morrisville squad. They kept the Mustangs on their toes throughout the entire first half, launching a whopping 19 total shots. All were saved by goalkeeper Ainslie Romasco, before the Lakers eventually broke through as Solange Catano-Matip angled a perfect pass to Alison Dimitrijevski, who one-timed a shot past her defender.
After gaining a one-goal cushion, the Lakers kept their foot on the gas pedal with three more goals by the game’s end. Julia Carter found a loose ball in the middle of the box and softly put it past the goalie to go up 2-0, before Sarah Merlo miraculously scored with a header that deflected off the top of the net.
Sabrina Schmitt secured the last goal, as the junior forced a turnover before racing past her defender and powerfully launching it above the head of a jumping Romasco.
The Lakers used the last 10 minutes to put on a strong showing of defense, claiming their first victory since Sept. 11, when they overcame Alfred University in a 3-0 shutout. The Lakers will now look to a critical road matchup versus SUNY Canton on Oct. 17, before returning home for their final pair of regular season contests against Alfred State (Oct. 21) and SUNY Potsdam (Oct. 24), respectively.
