Men’s soccer uses 3 different goal scorers, downs Morrisville in first SUNYAC win

In a game that never felt close, the Oswego State Lakers handled the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs 4-0, behind a two-goal game from Ian Husselbeck at Laker Turf on Oct. 14.

The Lakers got an early goal from Ian Husselbeck and never looked back as they dominated most of the game with sustained offensive pressure. Oswego was also the more physical team, which at times resulted in fouls and cards.

After several minutes of sustained pressure in the Morrisville half of the field, Oswego finally got on the board courtesy of midfielder Ian Husselbeck. Husselbeck received a seam pass from Dylan Manriquez that threaded the needle between two Morrisville defenders, whom Husselbeck beat to the ball, putting it past Jonathan Tolpa to make it a one-goal advantage for Oswego.

Morrisville responded with some offense of their own, thanks to some yellow cards called on the Lakers, which the Oswego bench found to be questionable. Oswego goalkeeper Kyle Rose and the defense in front of him snuffed out any opportunity the Mustangs had to get on the board, though.

Ian Husselbeck found the net once again following a corner kick that bounced around in the box before finding Simon Bastone, whose shot was denied by a spectacular diving save from Tolpa. Husselbeck managed to untangle himself from a Mustang defender just in time to collect the rebound, redirecting the ball off the back of his head and into the net. The goal, his seventh of the season and second of the game, gave the Lakers a two-goal lead with just under three minutes remaining in the half.

Kieran Husselbeck scored early in the second half, sealing the game for the Lakers. Manriquez also logged his second assist of the game on the goal. Oswego would score another later in the half to make it 4-0.

The Lakers outshot the Mustangs 6-to-5 in the contest, with each team drawing two yellow cards, while Morrisville drew more fouls, 12 to Oswego’s nine.

Oswego will look to win two in a row for the first time this season when they host SUNY Canton in a senior day clash Saturday afternoon.
