Oswego field hockey drops 5th straight to William and Smith

Coming into their matchup with William Smith College (7-8), the Oswego State field hockey team (4-8) had not scored in its four prior games; that trend continued Tuesday night as the Lakers were shut out again, 4-0.

It has been five games, 20 days, 331 minutes and 44 seconds of game time without a goal, with the last coming courtesy of Gabby Curtis on Sept. 23 at St. John Fisher University, a game in which the Lakers were outshot 19-2 but won 2-1 in a shootout. Adding salt to the wound, Oswego has not registered a shot on goal since Sept. 26’s shutout loss to Houghton University.

William Smith kept the shooting gallery going into this match, scoring four goals on 23 shots on goal and 35 shots in total. Oswego goalie Sam Krautheim kept the Lakers in the game, saving 19 shots and making several extravagant saves.

Oswego kept William Smith off the scoreboard through the first 25 minutes before the Herons broke through in the 26th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. William Smith added three goals in the third quarter to extend the Herons’ lead, putting the final nail in the coffin for the Lakers.

On the bright side, this year’s squad is still three games off the program’s worst scoreless skid, which is infamously held by the 1991 team, which was shutout in eight consecutive games.

The Lakers return to the port city Friday to play host to the 5-7 Manhattanville College Valiants in a non-conference battle.
