Lakers finish 2nd at Empire 8 fall championship

After two days of action at the Lakeshore Country Club in Cicero, New York, the Oswego State men’s golf team finished in second place at the Empire 8 championship.

The Lakers opened day one in strong fashion, as a squad that is headlined by youth rose to second place. Tyler Simonetti set the tone early, recording a pair of birdies on the front nine and finishing +1 (73) to tie for second. Tyce Helmick used a birdie on the back nine to finish with a 76 (+4) on the day, while Drew Kippen tied for 11th after logging three birdies and finishing with a 78 (+6).

Jack Shaw, Sam Ligas and Justin Alvord rounded the day out, with Shaw and Ligas both finishing in a tie for 15th (+7), while Alvord concluded with an 80 (+8).

After an impressive showing on the first day, the Lakers returned on Oct. 12 and built on their momentum. Helmick impressed with an even par, closing out the back nine with three birdies to finish fourth overall, while Simonetti used a birdie on the 16th hole to finish in fifth. Shaw saw an improvement in his shots and moved to 11th place (74, +2), while Alvord and Ligas tied for 17th. Kippen finished things up, scoring a 79 (+7) to tie for 22nd.

Overall, the Lakers tied with Clarkson University for second place, while Nazareth University rose to the top, finishing in first place at +32 (23.85 points). Russell Sage College, Hobart College, St. Lawrence University, Utica University, SUNY Canton and the Nazareth B team rounded out the top 10.

The Lakers now earn a break, and will tee things up again in the spring. EG
