Women’s hockey season ends with 2-1 playoff loss against Cortland
The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team saw its season come to a close on Saturday, Feb. 28, falling 2 – 1 to Cortland in a tightly contested SUNYAC playoff matchup.
The contest remained scoreless through the opening ten minutes as both defenses stood tall and limited quality scoring chances. Each side traded early shots, with goaltenders Mia DeVivo and Cortland’s Eline Gillodes setting the tone between the pipes. Oswego generated pressure midway through the first period, but Gillodes turned aside several attempts to keep the game deadlocked.
Cortland broke through at the 10:58 mark of the first period when Genevieve Sbrocca found the back of the net on an even-strength opportunity. The Red Dragons capitalized on a quick offensive sequence, giving them a 1–0 lead. Despite multiple late pushes from the Lakers, including chances from Brittany Iversen and Shaye Jasiel, Oswego was unable to respond before the intermission.
The second period featured continued back-and-forth play, but Cortland extended its lead midway through the frame. At 11:38, Fanny Aneborn scored what ultimately stood as the game-winning goal, finishing a play assisted by Katie Mahoney and Katie Diem. The Red Dragons took advantage of their offensive zone time, pushing the score to 2–0.
Oswego continued to battle throughout the period, generating several quality looks. Kayla Doerre, Leah Coley and Tilly Pethrick each recorded shots during the stretch, but Gillodes remained steady in the net. DeVivo also came up with key saves to prevent further separation, keeping the Lakers within striking distance heading into the final 20 minutes.
Refusing to let their season end quietly, the Lakers intensified their pressure in the third period. Oswego outshot Cortland 10–2 in the final frame, controlling possession and forcing the Red Dragons to defend deep in their own zone.
The persistence paid off at 9:46 of the third period when Pethrick scored her third goal of the season. Iversen delivered the assist, setting up Pethrick for a clean finish that cut the deficit to 2–1 and energized the home crowd.
With momentum shifting, Oswego continued to press. The Lakers earned a crucial power-play opportunity at 14:34 after Cortland was called for hooking. During the advantage, Lauren Riccobelli and Coley each fired shots on net, but Gillodes made several key stops to preserve the one-goal lead.
In a final effort to force overtime, Oswego pulled DeVivo for an extra attacker with 1:10 remaining in regulation. The Lakers created late chances, including attempts from Meagan Smith and Riccobelli, but Cortland’s defense blocked key shots and cleared rebounds in the closing seconds. When the final horn sounded, Cortland secured the 2–1 victory, ending Oswego’s postseason run.
DeVivo finished the contest with 13 saves, while Gillodes recorded 24 saves in the win. The Lakers concluded their season with an overall record of 14–10–2, demonstrating resilience and competitiveness throughout the year.
