City of Oswego, university planning eclipse events

Both SUNY Oswego and the City of Oswego are gearing up for the eclipse happening April 8, with several events throughout the weekend.

The City of Oswego is hosting two main events the weekend before the eclipse. April 6 is Small Business Saturday, which will feature storewide sales from several City of Oswego businesses.

On April 7, the city is hosting a block party. The party will be on West 1st Street from 4-9 p.m. There will be food and live music by Jess Novak.

The City of Oswego has highlighted several recommended places to view the eclipse. These places include Breitbeck Park, Fort Ontario and the Lake Ontario Event & Conference Center. 

SUNY Oswego is also hosting several events for the eclipse. These events are divided into both academic-focused events and community-focused events.

The community-focused events include planetarium shows and science demonstrations at the Shineman Center on April 8. There will be three planetarium shows, one from noon until 12:45 p.m., one from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and a final show from 2 to 2:45 p.m. All of the shows are sold out. The science demonstrations will take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Penfield Library is hosting a books and crafts event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be eclipse themed crafts and book displays.

SUNY Oswego is also conducting a ballooning experiment from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Swetman Field. The event will include educational demonstrations of equipment and craft projects.

SUNY Oswego is also hosting several guest lecturers. 

Five guest lecturers will be hosted in the Shineman Center. Sarbani Basu, professor of astronomy at Yale will give her lecture at 9:15 a.m. Martin Hendry, professor of gravitational physics and cosmology at the University of Glasgow will give his lecture at 9:45 a.m. Earl Bellinger, professor of astronomy at Yale will give his lecture at 10:30 a.m. Anil Pradhan, professor of astronomy, chemical physics and interdisciplinary biophysics at Ohio State will give his lecture at 11:30 a.m. Lyn Blanchfield, professor of history at SUNY Oswego will give her lecture at noon.

The eclipse will begin at 2:08 p.m. and end at 4:34 p.m. Totality will begin at 3:21 p.m.
