Oswego State field hockey losing streak extended to two

On Sept. 23 Oswego State field hockey traveled to Rochester, NY, for a non conference matchup versus the University of Rochester Yellowjackets, ultimately falling to their sting 2-0.

The Yellowjackets had an aggressive start to the game as they had one penalty corner and three shots within the first nine minutes on the clock, keeping the Lakers away from any offensive opportunities. Oswego had to stay tough on defense right out of the gate if they wanted a chance to stay competitive throughout the game.

Oswego was hungry on the offense from the get-go in the second period. Ellie Kazel and Bryleigh Beauchat each had a shot on goal within the first two and a half minutes. Kacie Simzer took a shot that was just wide of the goal five seconds later.  University of Rochester scored their first goal of the game off of a penalty corner with less than two minutes on the clock.

Starting off the second half of the game, in similar fashion, the Yellowjackets’ second goal was scored off of a penalty corner in the thirty-seventh minute. Oswego State lacked the offensive push to attempt any shots at answering back.

The Lakers’ lone shot on goal in the fourth period was made by junior Kaitlyn Jordan.

University of Rochester bested the Lakers offensively specifically in shots (21-4) which contributed to their downfall. First year goalie KY Phillips totaled ten saves for the day. Maddie Pflume and Erin Schaefer each had a defensive save.

The Yellowjackets have shown their dominance over the Lakers for many years, beating them in every matchup (11 games) since 2001. Against Rochester, their record is 10-24-3.

So far this season the Lakers are led offensively by Kate McNally, Kazel, Simzer and Nancy Pagliaroli. McNally is the team leader in goals scored thus far with four under her belt. Not only does the midfielder lead the team, but she also scored all four goals against SUNY Morrisville.

Kazel had three goals and three assists on the season. Likewise against Morrisville, she made two goals and assisted three. Midfielder Simzer totals two goals and two assists. Pagliaroli has two goals and one assist.

In net, KY Phillips has an astounding 45 saves. She dominated against Ithaca College and University of Rochester where she had 16 and 10 saves respectively. Phillips also had shutouts versus Keystone College and Morrisville.

The Lakers will need to play hard in the upcoming weeks in order to stay competitive in the SUNYAC. Things look optimistic as they have won their only conference game played thus far against Morrisville 12-0.

Oswego had another road game on Sept. 27 where they took on the Utica University Pioneers.

The first period had a slow start with zero shots on goal from either team. They battled it out within the midfield to gain control of the ball.

The Pioneers scored at the end of the first half off a penalty corner.

Six minutes into the second half Bryleigh Beauchat scored the Lakers first goal from an assist by McNally to tie up the game. This was also Beauchat’s first goal of the season. Utica had multiple corners and shots but Oswego remained strong to defend their goal.

The fourth period rallied back and forth between the Lakers and Pioneers. Both McNally and Erin Schaefer were given yellow cards.

The tied game went into overtime where Utica bested the Lakers offensively, scoring the winning goal after nearly seven minutes.

Oswego Field Hockey will battle at home against New Paltz on Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. They will go on the road again Oct. 3 to go head-to-head with the Keuka College Wolves starting at 4 p.m. Both are Teal Night games to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.
