Week in SA

While The Oswegonian is financed by the Oswego State Student Association, all reporting of SA is unbiased through reporting of facts. SA meets virtually every Tuesday at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Meetings can be accessed with the following link: https://zoom.us/j/91262556247

SA passes new diversity act

SA formally proposed, and passed, the “Revolutionize My Curriculum Act” (RES 56.01), which will officially implement new courses on diversity. The act states that “our campus is in need of change, starting within the classroom.” Under the proposal, Oswego State would implement a new diversity category under General Education courses, beginning in the Fall of 2023. The category would be introduced in addition to pre-existing Gen Ed categories and would be required for all incoming students.

Details provided on potential diversity course

On the topic of the proposed diversity courses, Oswego State Professor Christopher LaLonde spoke to SA, answering questions about one course that is currently in development. According to LaLonde, the course will be based on “diversity, identity and social justice in the United States.” The course is being designed to educate students on their identity, the identities of others, as well as the ideas of privilege and how it can affect others.

Public office hours planned for SA chairs

As a part of their effort to raise student involvement, SA is planning to coordinate office hours for the chairs of each committee. Each chair will be available for virtual appointments or meetings during their designated office hours. This will allow students to drop in with questions, comments or any concerns they may have involving SA. The only exception will be SA President Lizeth Ortega-Ramirez, who said her office hours will be by appointment-only.

VoteOswego announces new program

SA is continuing to ramp up efforts to increase voter participation, as VoteOswego has announced a new program called the “Pass Program.” Once signed up, students will receive notifications via text, which can then be forwarded to friends. It will also provide students with notifications for upcoming deadlines, such as the deadline to register or mail in an absentee ballot. The link to sign up can be found on VoteOswego’s Instagram page (@voteoswego).

Health Services providing flu clinics

Health Services will be collaborating with Wegmans to provide flu clinics for Oswego State students, faculty and staff, according to SA advisor Jerri Howland. Wegmans will be setting up a booth in the Marano Campus Center to provide services from Oct. 6 to Oct. 23. They will also be providing flu shots by appointment, for students only.
