Laker Gameday Preivew: Men’s hockey vs. Plattsburgh State (SUNYAC Semifinals)

It is Whiteout 2.0 tonight as the Oswego State men’s hockey teams hosts rival Plattsburgh State for the SUNYAC Semifinals at 7 p.m. in the Marano Campus Center.

This is also the 131st meeting between the two teams, all since November 1976. Plattsburgh State has a 79-43-8 overall record in the rivalry. However, Oswego State has won the last three meetings.

The Lakers swept the regular season series, winning 3-0 in November and then 4-2 in the North Country in February. Carter Allen, Anthony Passero and Tyler Currie all scored in the November meeting at home. David Richer made 25 saves, while Jimmy Poreda made 26 stops on 29 shots.

In the second meeting, Steven Kozikoski was in net stopping 31 of 33 shots. Jimmy Poreda had 19 saves. Michael Gillespie had a goal and three assists, while Alex DiCarlo chipped in two goals. Josh Zizek had the remaining goal. Ryan Kuhn and Brendan Young scored for Plattsburgh State.

A win tonight sends the victorious team to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday for the SUNYAC Championship.

Last Time Out

Oswego State

The Lakers have not played since Senior Night on Feb. 22 with a 4-1 win over SUNY Fredonia. Josh Zizek had two goals during, including the empty-net goal with 8.1 seconds left in the period, while Anthony Passero and Carter Allen rounded out the scoring for the Lakers. Tyler Currie and Jody Sullivan, also seniors, recorded two assists. David Richer, in his first start in over a month on Senior Night, made 14 saves on 15 shots.

Plattsburgh State

The Cardinals had to play in the first-round game of the SUNYAC playoffs against The College at Brockport last Wednesday. Sixty minutes was not enough to decide a victor, and it took until 11:09 of the second overtime period to have a winner. Matt Araujo took a shot from the blue line that went past the Golden Eagles’ goaltender. Christian DeFelice scored the other two goals in the 3-2 battle for Plattsburgh State. Jimmy Poreda made 37 saves in net.

Players to Watch

OSW: Josh Zizek

This senior wants to continue his season as long as possible, trying to extend his collegiate career. With a single-game elimination going on with the SUNYACs, expect the captain to come out firing. Josh Zizek had two goals against SUNY Fredonia on Senior Night. A big rivalry night is upon him.

PLA: Christian DiFelice

After a two-goal performance in the double-overtime victory over The College at Brockport last Wednesday, the sophomore is now on a three-game point streak. Looking to ride the momentum from the game against the Golden Eagles, expect DiFelice to be a tough man to stop on that second line, along with Liam Lawson.

Prediction

You could not have created a better storyline going into tonight’s game. Oswego State vs. Plattsburgh State. One of the best rivalries in Div. III hockey, spanning more than four decades. Going into the SUNYAC Semifinals, along with a trip to the championship on the line, no one could ask for more.

It is also the third meeting between these two teams this season. The last time Oswego State swept a three-game series was the 2010-2011 season. Last season these two teams met in the same scenario, but the Lakers won the first game at the Marano Campus Center and the Cardinals won the game on their home ice.

Oswego State has been on a hot streak, entering the game on a four-game win streak following the loss to SUNY Geneseo. However, Plattsburgh State has the double-overtime win, and ended the regular season with a three-game win streak.

No matter what, this should be a typical rivalry matchup between these two teams. There is no doubt about it. It should be physical, low scoring just what a fan wants out of this rivalry.

Prediction: Oswego State wins 3-2, advancing to the SUNYAC Championship.
