Laker Gameday Preview: Men’s hockey at SUNY Potsdam

Michael Gillespie and Alex DiCarlo both had multi-point nights in the Oswego State men’s hockey team’s 4-2 win over Plattsburgh State last night. The win signifies the first time the Lakers have swept the regular season series against the Cardinals since the 2010-2011 season.

The North Country trip continues with a game at SUNY Potsdam tonight. In the first game against the Bears, Oswego State took home a dominating 8-1 victory behind two goals and two assists from Travis Broughman.

Anthony Passero had added three assists. Both Joseph Molinaro and Carson Vance had two-point games with a goal and assist each. Tanner Spink, Jeff Solow, Colton Fletcher and Jody Sullivan all rounded out the scoring for the Lakers. Cedric Hansen made 20 saves in the game.

For SUNY Potsdam, former Laker Robert Clerc was the only player able to find the back of the net, with assists from Tyler Young and Thomas Terranova. Michael Paglucca made 31 saves in the game, while Connor Green made two in the last 2:42 of the game.

Players to Watch

OSW: Alex DiCarlo

The lone freshman on this Oswego State men’s hockey team is finding his footing with the team. After a four-point game against SUNY Canton last weekend, Alex DiCarlo followed up with a two-goal game against Plattsburgh State last night. The game was also his fourth multi-point night of the season. With the Lakers’ current situation, trying to fight for that regular season trophy for the SUNYAC, different players are going to have to start stepping up, and DiCarlo is no exception.

POT: Vincent Guimond

Thanks to the power play, along with Vincent Guimond, the Bears secured a 4-1 victory over SUNY Cortland and gained two crucial league points. On the power play, SUNY Potsdam went 3-5, with Guimond scoring the goal on all three of the successful attempts, recording a hat-trick in the first period alone.

SUNYAC Update

Following all of SUNYAC action on Friday, here are the updated standings as of Saturday, Feb. 1:

  1. SUNY Geneseo — 16 points (14-3-2 overall, 7-1-2 SUNYAC)
  2. Oswego State — 14 points (10-8-0, 7-2-0 SUNYAC)
  3. The College at Brockport — 12 points (12-7-0, 6-5-0 SUNYAC)
  4. Buffalo State — 11 points (9-7-2 overall, 5-3-1 SUNYAC)
  5. Morrisville State — 10 points (8-10-0 overall, 5-6-0 SUNYAC)
  6. SUNY Potsdam — 9 points (5-14-1 overall, 4-7-1 SUNYAC)
  7. SUNY Cortland — 8 points (9-8-1 overall, 4-7-0 SUNYAC)
  8. Plattsburgh State — 8 points (6-10-3 overall, 3-5-2 SUNYAC)
  9. SUNY Fredonia — 4 points (4-8-6 overall, 1-6-2 SUNYAC)

Here is what teams are playing tonight and their opponent:

  • SUNY Geneseo will stick around in Morrisville for the second game of the series against the Mustangs for a 4 p.m. game
  • Oswego State travels to the Maxcy Ice Arena to face the Bears for a 7 p.m. puck drop
  • The College at Brockport hits the road for a game against Bryan Athyn University (non-league) for a 4 p.m. start-time
  • Buffalo State will host the second half of The Battle of the Lake against SUNY Fredonia for a 7 p.m. game
  • Morrisville State stays in town to host SUNY Geneseo for the grudge match of the weekend series for a 4 p.m. puck drop
  • SUNY Potsdam will play host to Oswego State for a 7 p.m. game
  • SUNY Cortland stays in the North Country for a game against Plattsburgh State for a 7 p.m. game
  • Plattsburgh State will take on SUNY Cortland to wrap up the season series for a 7 p.m. start-time
  • SUNY Fredonia will head north just a little bit to Buffalo State, still looking for its second league win, for a 7 p.m. puck drop

Prediction

It has been repeated a lot in the last couple weeks, especially after the 3-2 overtime loss to SUNY Cortland, that every league game is crucial. Head coach Ed Gosek says it every year at the pre-season press conference: there is no game the team can afford to give up. Now that the Lakers have swept Plattsburgh State, they need to sweep SUNY Potsdam during the regular season, as well.

Assuming SUNY Geneseo wins against Morrisville State, and Oswego State takes down the Bears, there is still a two-point difference with the Lakers having a game in-hand against the Knights. After SUNY Potsdam, Oswego State’s next opponent?

SUNY Geneseo.

If Oswego State falls in this one, SUNY Geneseo has an easy ride to first place in the league. Maybe Gosek is right, even though everyone kind of jokes about it, every league game is crucial, especially this season.

SUNY Potsdam, like any other team in the league, cannot be overlooked. After the 4-1 win against SUNY Cortland last night, it is obvious that the Bears’ power play is on fire—or at least Vincent Guimond is. The Bears have won back-to-back games, after losing back-to-back games. They are looking to stay in that sixth spot of the SUNYACs, to remain in the playoffs, just hoping for a shot.

With Alex DiCarlo’s fine stretch, along with Michael Gillespie’s eight points in two games—doubling his point total on the season—Oswego State now has a new look.

Prediction: After a high-scoring affair last time, both teams are extremely different. Oswego State takes this one 7-3 in an unusual scoring affair for both sides.
