Laker Hockey Men's Hockey Sports

Laker Gameday Preview: No. 3 Men’s hockey vs. The College at Brockport (Game 1 of 2)

The No. 3 Oswego State men’s hockey team (3-0-0, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) will be hosting The College at Brockport (3-1-0, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) on Friday night in the Lakers’ fourth overall and SUNYAC matchup of the season.

Oswego State and The College at Brockport both have six points in conference, but with winning percentages, the Lakers are first in the SUNYAC.

In last season’s two matchups between the Lakers and Golden Eagles, Oswego State won both matchups. In the first matchup at the Marano Campus Center on Nov. 30, the Lakers won 5-2 during the Teddy Bear Toss. At the Tuttle North Ice Arena on Feb. 8, the Golden Eagles were shutout 3-0.

Josh Molinaro recorded two goals and an assist in the two games. Anthony Passero and Tyler Currie both had three assists each. Travis Broughman also chipped in two goals. Josh Zizek and Mitch Emerson rounded out the goal-scorers. David Richer played both games, making 54 saves between both games.

For The College at Brockport, both of their goal scorers have returned. Danny Rock and Hunter Laslo both scored in the 5-2 loss. Jeremy Solat, Doc Gentzler and Jake Colosanti all recorded assists. Jake Moore played in the 5-2 loss, making 22 saves, while Matt Schneider made 19 saves in the second game.

Bigger than Hockey

This game will serve as the Lakers’ fourth annual Teddy Bear Toss. The College at Brockport has been part of three of them. In the four years, Oswego State fans have donated over 2,000 stuffed animals — including over 800 last season — to the Toys for Tots for Oswego County.

Fans are encouraged to throw a stuffed animal following the first Oswego State goal. Players and volunteers will be picking up the bears off the ice during a short stoppage in the action.

Last Time Out

OSW: Oswego State hosted its annual Whiteout Weekend, with a 3-0 win over Plattsburgh State and a 8-1 rout of SUNY Potsdam. The weekend was highlighted by Travis Broughman, recording five points (2g, 3a) and being named SUNYAC Men’s Hockey Player of the Week. He was also named Oswego State’s Athlete of the Week. David Richer recorded his first shutout of the season with the win over Plattsburgh State. Cedric Hansen played in the SUNY Potsdam matchup.

Anthony Passero had a four-point weekend (1g, 3a). His lone goal of the weekend opened up scoring against the Cardinals. Carson Vance also recorded his first collegiate goal, after two seasons at Div. I Western Michigan University. Oswego State allowed its first power play goal against SUNY Potsdam, which was scored by former Laker Robert Clerc, who transferred to the Bears midway through last season.

BPT: The Golden Eagles had a back-to-back series with Morrisville State, which now has six points, as well. The College at Brockport won the first game 6-0. Anthony Hora had two goals and an assist. Connor Hutchins had a goal and three assists, while Gentzler had three assists. Matt Schneider had an 11-save shutout. Morrisville State came back to win 4-1 the next game, however. Jordan Renaud was the lone Golden Eagle to score. Schneider made 10 saves in the loss.

Players to Watch

OSW: Travis Broughman

After not scoring in the opening matchup against SUNY Cortland, Travis Broughman made his presence known with a five-point weekend against Plattsburgh State and SUNY Potsdam. He earned both SUNYAC recognition and was named Oswego State Athlete of the Week. The sophomore now has 28 career points. After finding the back of the net, expect Broughman to come out firing in one of Oswego State’s toughest weekends of the season.

BPT: Connor Hutchins

Anthony Passero said it best in his first season as a Laker: everyone brings their A-game to Oswego State, knowing the national dominance the Lakers have. Connor Hutchins, one of the two captains for The College at Brockport, has a goal and five assists on the season. The senior from Texas will look to get the team back on its winning ways after falling to Morrisville State on Saturday.

  7. SUNY Potsdam (1 point, 0-3-1 overall, 0-3-1 SUNYAC)
  8. Buffalo State (0 points, 1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 SUNYAC)
  9. SUNY Fredonia (0 points, 1-2-0 overall, 0-2-0 SUNYAC)

SUNYAC Schedule for Friday, Nov. 15:

  • Oswego State hosts The College at Brockport
  • The College at Brockport travels to Oswego State
  • Morrisville State hosts Stevenson University (non-SUNYAC matchup)
  • SUNY Geneseo travels to SUNY Cortland
  • SUNY Cortland hosts SUNY Geneseo
  • Plattsburgh State hosts SUNY Fredonia
  • SUNY Potsdam hosts Buffalo State
  • Buffalo State travels to SUNY Potsdam
  • SUNY Fredonia travels to Buffalo State

Things to Note

  • On the North Country Sweep:
    • Anthony Passero: “We have a lot of top-end talent that finally got put on display. We just put our name out there … For us not to play our best game in the third [against Plattsburgh State] and to still win 3-0, I think it says a lot about the group.”
    • Ed Gosek: “Anytime that you can have balanced scoring, that’s a bonus, so you’re not relying on the same guys to produce.”
      • Gosek always talks about “by committee,” or wide-spread scoring. For the last couple seasons, the Lakers thought they had that. But, they still relied too much on players like Passero, Zizek or Molinaro to find the back of the net. This season, with the addition of Carson Vance, there is a more multi-dimensional defense and a lot of players have already found the back of the net. Anyone on the roster can shoot the puck and score; they just have to keep putting shots on net.
  • On Brockport and it losing to Morrisville:
    • Anthony Passero; “Morrisville is a good team. Everyone in the SUNYAC is. … Anything can happen. They’ve had a good start. … It’s a testament to our conference.”
      • I’ll be the first to admit, I did not expect to see Oswego State, The College at Brockport and Morrisville State to be the top three teams of the SUNYAC after two weeks of regular-season play. Morrisville State got a strong start sweeping SUNY Fredonia. The College at Brockport will need to bounce back heavily here against a strong Oswego State team that has found the back of the net a lot.
  • On the Teddy Bear Toss:
    • Josh Zizek: “It’s a super cool moment just to be a part of it. I’ going to try to score first again this weekend. … It’s really cool to see how many bears get thrown on the ice.”
      • This is one of those moments where the Lakers are playing for something bigger than the game of hockey. Hundreds of stuffed animals will be donated to those less fortunate, all thanks to one Oswego State goal. Zizek scored the goal last season — he wants to do it again, and it would be the first of his senior season.”

Prediction

The last time Oswego State lost to The College at Brockport was a 3-2 loss on Feb. 15, 2014. The next meeting, Nov. 21, 2014, was a 4-4 tie between the two teams. The Lakers hold a 94-6-6 overall record over the Golden Eagles, including a 53-2-4 record while playing in Oswego. Needless to say, Oswego State has a dominant presence over the Golden Eagles.

Oswego State’s offense was in full force against SUNY Potsdam, scoring six goals in the third period alone. The College at Brockport fell to the hands of Morrisville State that same night. It was the tale of two teams on Saturday.

The winner of this game will have sole possession of first place for the SUNYAC. But, the weekend is not over yet, with the Lakers facing tough competition on Saturday, as well, against SUNY Geneseo.

With David Richer starting in net, there will be questions of his health, after he was considered day-to-date throughout the week. Most assumed he would only play the game against SUNY Geneseo, but he could potentially get both games.

Prediction: 5-3 Oswego State over The College at Brockport
