Laker Hockey Men's Hockey Sports

Laker Gameday Preview: Men’s hockey vs. Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL) [Exhibition]

The Oswego State men’s hockey team is hosting the Carleton Place Canadians of the Central Canada Hockey League, a Junior A league in the eastern part of Ontario, Canada. This is the second year that the Lakers have hosted the Canadians.

Carleton Place has already played 19 games this season in the CCHL, entering the game against Oswego State in mid-season form. The Canadians have one alumnus on the Lakers, sophomore Travis Broughman, who played 60 games during the 2017-2018 season and tallied 65 points for Carleton Place. Former Laker captain Devin Campbell played with them from 2011-2015 with 226 with 57 points.

Prior to Carleton Place, Oswego State hosted the CCHL All-Graduate team for three years, with the Lakers winning two of the three games.

This game will be the first of two exhibition games for Oswego State. On Oct. 26, the Lakers will host Nazareth College before the regular season begins on Nov. 1 against SUNY Cortland.

Player Spotlight

OSW: Anthony Passero

Passero is on the third line for the exhibition against Carleton Place, but he is, once again, paired up with Travis Broughman. Last season, Passero said a lot of his success came from playing with the now-sophomore. Passero also led the team in points last year as a first-year transfer from Buffalo State, so expect him to continue the performance now that he is in his second year with Oswego State, and is also one of the alternate captains.

CPC: Ryland Mosley

Mosley is five committed players to play in the NCAA next year from Carleton Place. He will be joining Div. I University of Alabama-Huntsville. He currently leads the team with 27 points, including a team-leading eight goals as well as a tie for the team lead in assists with 19. While he is not looking for colleges still, he will still want to place a good impression on what kind of talent he has against a strong Div. III program in Oswego State.

Prediction

While Carleton Place is in mid-season form compared to Oswego State who has had a lone week of official practices with coaches and everything, the Lakers should be able to come out on top. They have team chemistry early, as do the Canadians, but with 14 seniors on the roster, it will be interesting to see what Oswego State brings to the table early in the season.

Notably out of the lineup are Michael Gillespie and Jeff Solow, who are healthy scratches due to a violation of team rules, according to head coach Ed Gosek. Gillespie is a strong forward with a great shot, and Solow is a defenseman who has offensive capabilities and paired nicely last season with Charlie Pelnik. Carson Vance, the first-year transfer from Div. I Western Michigan University, is also scratched for the game for the same reasons. The Lakers will have to wait just a little bit to see what he brings to the table coming from a Div. I school with playing experience.

All three goaltenders will play in the game, Gosek also said. If the goaltenders are playing by order on the line charts, Cedric Hansen will be playing the first period. This will be the first chance for the two starters, Hansen and David Richer, to see who has the hot hand early and can take the crease in the beginning of the season.

With the game being an exhibition, it will also be interesting to see how the Lakers utilize their extra forward and defenseman, who Colton Fletcher and Tyler Antonucci. Neither of those players were consistently in the lineup last season as freshmen, but could make a significant impact this season depending on how they play in their exhibition games this season.

Prediction: Oswego State takes this game 4-2 with an empty net goal later in the third period.
