Halloween is a time of dressing up as anything, or anyone your heart desires. Â However, often times what you think is a harmless costume, may actually offend a group of people or persons. Â How far is too far? Â Is you dressing up as Caitlyn Jenner going to offend a population of people? Â Or do you get a âpassâ of sorts on this âbe anythingâ holiday?

Biology major Iassis Tejata argues that some people donât necessarily realize how they could be offending others. Like for example, the impact of dressing as an Indian- this could be offense to their culture.
âRecently itâs been getting out of hand, certain people have a culture and some people do costumes that imitate to that culture but they donât notice that itâs offensiveâ, Tejata said.
Broadcasting and mass communication major, Bobby Williamson says itâs difficult to determine because certain people may have a reason as to why they are wearing the costume that offends someone.

Freshman Skye Prosper says you can offend a certain community; like the transgender community, especially if a certain individual hasnât made it known that they are transitioning.
âYou canât really do anything about it because at the end of the day people are still going to do itâ, she added.

Junior, Jordan McGee takes a little bit of a different perspective on the matter. Â He thinks the degree of offensiveness is ultimately based off of other peopleâs personal perceptions.
âIf you portray it [your costume] in an offensive way then itâs gonna be taken that wayâ, McGee said.

One junior wrapped everything up nicely, recalling a time in her life when she witnessed this very situation.
