Kanye shows political interest at VMAs

Many people have opinions about Kanye West as an individual and as an artist. However, in the grand scheme of things, opinions of him are not slowing him down. In fact, he announced at the 2015 Video Music Awards, or VMAs, that he will be running for office as the President of the United States in the 2020 election. The fact that this has actually caused a ruckus is exactly the point that West was trying to make. Anyone can accomplish anything.

No matter how much backlash West gets, it is not going to take away his millions or make people enjoy his music less. Die-hard West fans, such as myself, really focused on what he said during his speech at the VMAs and giggled over his closing remarks. Everything he said was true. How can you take a group of talented musicians and make a majority of them out to be failures? That is like telling a mother that her son is less handsome than her neighbor’s.

Since West announced that he had smoked something to take the edge off and also announced he is going to run for president in the same speech, we have to assume that he is not serious. Hopefully, he is drawing a parallel to how ridiculously out of place it is for Donald Trump to be running in the 2016 election.

The possible reality of Kim Kardashian as the first lady turns our concept of a normal society upside down and that’s what West is here for. He is the voice asking “what if?” He is the artist that brings attention to the influence brands have over the American society. He’s the artist that is using his platform and making his music stop listeners daily lives to think, feel or even laugh.

The world can and probably will wonder for the next few years if West is actually going to run in the 2020 election, but what they should do is focus on West’s call for Americans to begin ignoring the impact of brands on our shopping habits and daily routines and help kids grow up with healthy self-esteem. West asks Americans to listen to the kids. It’s not a ridiculous request until he throws in his announcement about running for office. He’s Kanye West and you can’t tell him “nothing.”
