“There’s this new gourmet cupcake place over on West First, we need to go check it out”.
That’s what my friend Christy said when we left Azteca’s Mexican Grill this past April and I’ll never forget it. We never went to check out CupCakers that night, but every time I drove by West First Street I wondered if their cupcakes were any good. I’m not one to jump on the opportunity to eat cupcakes in the first place, I’m more of an ice cream person, but the second I tried CupCakers’ salted caramel cupcake, my opinion of cupcakes changed.
Not only was I upset with myself for waiting four full hours after buying the cupcake to eat it, I was more upset for depriving myself of these cupcakes for so long. To think that I waited almost four months after discovering that Oswego had a gourmet cupcake joint in the first place makes my heart hurt.
I first discovered CupCakers at the Oswego Farmers’ Market. The cupcakes were probably the most visually appealing baked good I had ever seen. They reminded me of the quality that I would see on a television baking show like “Cake Boss.”
Their eye-catching presentation wasn’t the only thing that had me impressed. For just $2.75 you can get a decent sized filled cupcake. If you aren’t looking to commit to a full sized one just yet, their mini cupcakes are $1.75 each.
What flavors, you ask? Well, there are countless recipes that owner Amy Sutter has come up with herself.
“Everything is made from scratch, real vanilla, heavy cream, real butter,” Sutter said. “We try to stay as natural as we can.”
Though some flavors rotate out depending on the season, Sutter said that on a daily basis they have peanut butter fudge, red velvet, triple chocolate mousse, salted caramel, Italian almond and white chocolate raspberry.
Since CupCakers’ grand opening on Nov. 1 2014, Sutter said, “everything has been going really well.”
So well that opening another location in future is not out of the question.
“There’s definitely a goal to have one in Syracuse, but I don’t have a date yet,” Sutter said.
She added that once they are a little more established and organized, an additional location could happen.
From the Regional Market in Syracuse where Amy Sutter first brought her cupcakes to sell, to Oswego’s own farmers’ market and the grand opening of CupCakers, what was once a hobby has grown quite quickly into a profitable business in just a few years.
“We really appreciate our customers, they’re just fabulous and they’re the ones that have really gotten us through all the long hours. They’re the reason why we’re here and they’re the reason why we’ve grown and I’ve been able to support my family,” Sutter said.
CupCakers is located at 172 W. First St. where they are open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Be sure to stop by and buy one of their cupcakes or cakes. Their pumpkin cream cheese filled cupcake is sure to put you in the mood for fall.
