Laker Game Day Preview: SUNYAC Baseball Tournament game 1 against College at Brockport

The Oswego State Lakers earned the No. 2 seed in the 2015 SUNYAC Baseball Championship Tournament and will take on the No. 4 seeded College at Brockport Golden Eagles. 

Oswego State (24-9, 14-4 SUNYAC) head to the fields at SUNY Cortland, the host of the tournament, after losing to Ithaca College, 6-4, at home on April 28. The Lakers are looking to return to their winning ways in today’s matchup at 3:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles (19-15, 10-8 SUNYAC) recently lost to the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, 8-7, on April 29. The team defeated No. 1 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland on April 3, 6-3. 

Leading the Lakers at the plate is Jordan Giller with a .407 batting average and 32 RBIs on the season. The first baseman has also been a defensive wizard with a .997 fielding percentage. Lead off man Dan Saccocio is batting .369 on the season and has an on-base percentage of .533. The outfielder has drawn a walk in 14 at bats and has been hit by a pitch in 25 this season. The Hamilton brothers, Eric and Brian, have added to an already powerful lineup. Eric is hitting .366 with 35 RBIs on the season, while Brian is hitting .358 with 13 RBIs. Myles Kutscher has 11 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 36 RBIs with a .339 batting average on the season. 

Oswego State’s pitching staff is currently ranked No. 5 national in team earned run average, through games played by April 26, with 2.61. Leading them with an overall record of 6-2 is Brendyn Karinchak, who holds an ERA of 1.70 through 53 innings pitched as well as 52 strikeouts. Miles Kelly has pitched 41 and 2/3 innings for the Lakers and holds a 3.67 ERA on the season. Kelly has a record of six wins and one loss and has struck out 30 this year. Pat Brown has been providing relief for Oswego State all season in 20.1 innings. Brown has let up just eight earned runs in 2015. 

Meanwhile, for the Golden Eagles Josh Martin leads the team with a .343 batting average. Also leading the team at the plate is Brendan Swayne who has 35 RBIs and a .322 batting average. Wesley Burghardt has batted in 43 runs and has posted a .275 batting average in 2015. 

On the mound for the Golden Eagles Zack Landers leads with a 2.40 ERA and a 6-1 record. He’s notched 30 strikeouts on the year. Nick Pontari holds a 3.63 ERA in his 12 appearances of relief. Jeffrey Prouse has 32 strikeouts for the Golden Eagles and an ERA of 3.97 in 34 innings pitched. 

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Wallace Field in Cortland, N.Y.
