For the first time since at least 2010, the Oswego State women’s tennis team are regular season champions of the SUNYAC, following a 7-0 senior day sweep of Oneonta on Oct. 10.
The lopsided win was Oswego’s 10th in a row since starting the season 0-2, the most since 2024, when the Lakers won their first 12 matches to start the campaign. That season, the Lakers lost in the SUNYAC championship to SUNY New Paltz.
Oswego took two of three doubles matches to gain an early advantage. Leah Bell and Emily DeLuca earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over Oneonta’s Haley Peck and Annika Cripe, while Avery Borman and Aubrey Salati added a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Dakota Jimenez and Ashley Glaviano.
Borman carried that momentum into singles play, battling back after dropping the first set to defeat Peck 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 1 singles. Bell was up next against Cripe, who came into the match leading the SUNYAC in single win percentage (.857) and a 6-1 record. Bell upset Cripe easily, winning two straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.
Isabella Eason added another point for the Lakers at No. 4 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win over Reagan Knapp. Oswego went on to sweep all six singles matches to secure the team victory.
The Lakers return to action on Oct. 16, when they head to Binghamton to take on rival Plattsburgh State in the SUNYAC semi-finals.
It’s the second straight season the Lakers have made the semi-finals, dropping a match 4-3 last year to SUNY Cortland. If the Lakers advance over the Cardinals, they would play for the first SUNYAC championship in school history against either Cortland or Oneonta.
