Following a game-winning goal in double-overtime against St. John Fisher University on Sept. 23, the Oswego State field hockey team split a two-game stretch with Houghton University and SUNY Geneseo.
Oswego suffered their third shutout of the season, 2-0, to a strong Houghton squad on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Laker Turf. The Lakers opened the contest strongly with a few key defensive stops, including a sliding save from goalie Sam Krautheim to keep the Highlanders at bay. It was only a matter of time before the visitors broke through though, as Lauren Thurber found the ball in the midst of chaos inside the box, launching a soft shot past the outstretched glove of Krautheim.
After going up 1-0, the Lakers and Highlanders neutralized each other’s attacks, back and forth, for the entire second quarter. It was not until early in the third quarter that the visitors notched a miraculous goal to put them up 2-0, as Kylee Barshinger launched a long shot that bounced off of the right goal post, high into the air, and knocked past Krautheim by Courtney Walbridge.
The Lakers had five chances within the remainder of the contest, although all turned up unsuccessfully. Highlanders goalie Amber Cribbs put on a strong showing through the full 60 minutes, recording three saves.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, their cold streak continued on Wednesday, Sept. 30, as they fell to SUNY Geneseo by a score of 7-0.
The Lakers were held to just one shot throughout the match, with Geneseo proving a strong and experienced defensive side. Addyson Carrier made a strong defensive stop for Oswego early on, although the Knights quickly responded with a goal before allowing six over the next three quarters.
Sam Krautheim made four saves on five shots before being substituted for Alisette Korn, who made a pair of saves while allowing the same number of goals.
The Lakers will look to rebound when they welcome nationally-ranked No. 4 Salisbury University to town for a matchup that opens SUNYAC play, kicking off on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 12 p.m.
