Two blown leads and a five-goal second-half onslaught courtesy of the undefeated Ithaca Bombers (7-0-1) was more than enough to put away Oswego State Lakers (2-2-1) on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the shadows of Cayuga Lake.

Despite taking the lead just 22 seconds into the match and winning the first half, Oswego could not fend off Ithaca’s relentless attack in the second half, blowing two seperate one goal leads, before allowing four unanswered to end the contest. It was the Lakers’ seventh loss in their last 10 games against Ithaca dating back to 1996.

Sophomore midfielder Vladimir Lavrynenko kicked off the scoring, capitalizing on a corner kick that boomeranged off a couple of players in front of the net before finding an open Lavrynenko in the slot, who shot it through a maze of defenders and past disoriented goalkeeper, Brayden Milbrandt, to make it 1-0 Oswego.

The rest of the half would go by without any notable action, with Ithaca doubling up Oswego on the shot clock 6-3 at the halftime horn.

The Bombers responded in kind to the Lakers’ goal just over two minutes into the second half, when substitute midfielder Joshua Bourdoulous picked his spot from 30 yards out, beating diving Oswego goalkeeper Kyle Rose to level the game at one

Oswego once again capitalized on set pieces, this time a free kick for senior Kieran Husselbeck, who rifled one into the top left corner from 20 yards out, sending the Oswego faithful who made the hour-and-a-half trip down into a frenzy.

As the rain started to fall harder on the Butterfield Stadium turf, the better the Bombers go. For the following 10 minutes, Ithaca dominated the shot clock and the majority of the possession time, wearing down the Lakers on the perimeter.

It wouldn’t be long until Ithaca knotted the game back up as Bourdoulous continued his big day by floating one over the goal area for a swarming Jack Carney, who knocked a two-hopper off his into the back of the net, for his fourth goal on the young season.

A little over a minute later, Ithaca would take the lead for the first time in the game. Freshman Gabriel Robinson used great footwork to juggle the ball and cut back on an Oswego defender before depositing it into the top shortside corner to make it 3-2 Bombers.

Ithaca would pour it on from here on out, exposing the Oswego defense on a weave play through the heart of the Lakers’ defensive zone, leaving Liam Breslin open to put it out in front for Colin Adams, who hit it in off his head into the goal for a 4-2 commanding lead for the Bombers.

Robinson would add another for the Bombers in the 78th minute, his second of the game, this time on a penalty kick. Ending the game as well as ending a putrid second half where the Lakers were outshot 12-4.

Rose made three stops on eight tries for the Lakers, while Milbrandt saved three on five attempts. Both teams were issued yellow cards in the game; in addition, Ithaca led in shots on goal, corner kicks, and fouls.

Oswego heads to the Flower City on Sept. 23 to take on a barely afloat University of Rochester squad.
