The Oswego men’s and women’s lacrosse season has started. However, little did the players know that the Saturday afternoon back-to-back games would be either cancelled or moved to the opposing school.
The men’s team was expected to play SUNY Geneseo on Feb 28, but due to weather and the Oswego turf not being plowed in time, the game got cancelled. The women’s team lucked out though, with Clarkson University allowing the Lakers to travel to them for an away game.
From the start of the matchup, the Lakers dominated with last year’s first team, all SUNYAC Aubriana Greene and second team, all SUNYAC Alexis Hill, who put the Lakers up 4-0 early in the first with Hill having three of the goals.
As the Lakers struck first in the second quarter to go up 5-2, the Clarkson Golden Knights responded quickly with four goals, two of them from Gabby Cranfield, giving her a hat trick early in the game and giving Clarkson some life back.
With the third quarter underway, the Golden Knights continued their goal streak. The Lakers responded quickly though, tying the game at 9-9 with three minutes to go. Clarkson struck last at the end of the third quarter with another goal by Karli Scherpf to give the Golden Knights a one-goal lead going into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Golden Knights were the stronger team, getting four goals in seven minutes, which gave them a comfortable lead by five.
With both the men’s and women’s teams playing on March 4, the women at SUNY Geneseo and the men hosting Clarkson University, there were two very large matchups.
On the men’s side, they faced off against Clarkson on March 4 at 4 p.m. The Golden Knights started hot, going up 3-0 by the end of the first quarter with goals by Peter Siracuse, William Goyette and Robert Fox. The Lakers ended up responding in the middle of the second quarter with Hayden Coney getting the ball in the back of the net past Griffin Emerson to put the Lakers on the board.
Clarkson’s Robert Fox decided to take control of the Golden Knights’ offense late into the second quarter, scoring another two goals giving him a hat trick halfway through the game. The Lakers had no response the rest of the quarter and went into the half down 6-1.
The Golden Knights continued to dominate on the offensive side of the field, scoring another five goals in the third quarter with goals from James O’Rourke, Mario Streiff, Fox, Alex Alfieri and Derek Torres.
On the defensive side of the field, Jack Garvey had four ground balls and four caused turnovers, helping lead the Clarkson defense to only allowing one goal all game.
By the end of the fourth quarter, the Golden Knights put a few more shots in the goal on goalies Seamus Hand and Tyler Novak. And on the defensive side shut down the offense to go home with a major win over the Lakers 14-1.
On the women’s side at Geneseo, they had an amazing matchup that unfortunately ended in a loss in overtime to put them at 1-2. Yet again, during this game Hill took over on the offensive side of the field, having six goals and one assist over the course of the game.
On Geneseo’s side, Katie Rajkowski helped lead the Knights to a victory, having a total of four goals during the game. Hannah Ruller had three goals and Rosemary Mahoney had two goals during the first four quarters and the game winner in overtime to beat the Lakers 15-14.
