Katseye’s Manon raises concerns on hiatus

Manon, a member of the popular girl group Katseye, was recently put on hiatus for her health and well-being. However, many people think otherwise; they believe that the producer of Katseye, Geffen Records, is preparing to kick her out of the group.

Katseye was formed through a survival show, “The Debut: Dream Academy.” The contestants were mixed and matched in groups to perform different songs. Their performances were posted on YouTube, and fans voted on an app called Weverse, where they could interact with celebrities. Fans could also like their favorite contestant’s fancam on YouTube. At the end of the show, Manon entered the final six, with other members Lara, Sophia, Yoonchae, Megan and Daniela, making up the group Katseye.

After Katseye made their debut, Netflix dropped the documentary “Popstar Academy,” which documented the group’s creation and their training for the survival series. But many fans found a problem. Throughout the documentary, Manon was portrayed as lazy and having no work ethic. Many of the other contestants who were on the survival show were seen saying that they would not want Manon in their girl group, or that she is not an ideal member. After seeing this, many pointed out that the way she was portrayed fit into a Black woman stereotype, that Black women are lazy and do not work for anything. But instead of fans accusing Manon of being lazy, they rallied beside her.

Manon instantly became a fan favorite, with many admiring her looks, as well as her vocals. Even when Manon had previous hiatuses, fans stuck up for her due to her declining health. This time around though, when Geffen Records announced Manon’s hiatus, fans were suspicious.

This suspicion only increased when Manon liked an Instagram post talking about Black women being mistreated by their label. After this, fans started noticing different ways that she has been mistreated by her label. Some examples include being put in the back throughout their first single, being cut out of group pictures on billboards and leaving her out of videos. There was even a member of Katseye whose father made a comment on Instagram stating that the group was bigger than one girl.

Despite the mistreatment of Manon, fans showed their support on various social media platforms, stating that they will always support her and that there is no Katseye without her. This sentiment was especially shown in the Black community, in which many are not fans of Katseye, but due to there being a Black girl in the group who is being mistreated, they want to give an endless amount of support. Celebrities such as SZA, Normani, Kehlani and more have even shown love to Manon under their Instagram comments. These Black women showing their support, specifically since they know how it feels to be mistreated, let many know that Manon will be forever loved, despite what comes next.
