The Oswego women’s Hockey team had a busy weekend of traveling with two SUNYAC matchups, starting their weekend off at SUNY Morrisville and then the next morning going to SUNY Cortland.
The Lakers went 1-1 on the weekend, winning against Morrisville 5-3 and losing to Cortland 3-1. After the weekend the Lakers moved to 11-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the SUNYAC.
The game started off slow at SUNY Morrisville. Not much action happened until two minutes and two seconds were left in the first period, when Helen VanDamme passed the puck to Erika Parenti, who put a shot on goal and went into the back of the net to put Oswego up 1-0 over Morrisville.
Going into the second period, there was a quick penalty from Morrisville’s Madison Lawrence for tripping. Oswego did not capitalize on this opportunity, though. After the Lakers had 20 shots with five minutes left in the second period and no luck, Liliana Ficaro took the 21st shot and scored on a pass from Tilly Pethrick to put the Lakers up 2-0 going into the third.
The very busy third period started with a goal two minutes in from Georgia Cunliffe to put the Lakers up 3-0 over the Mustangs. The Mustangs responded quickly with a goal from Ella Oakes to get momentum rolling, bringing the score to 3-1. Less than a minute and a half later, the Mustangs struck again with Karenhatironhtha Johnson’s goal, putting it to a one-score game.
As the momentum was still rising for the Mustangs late into the third, they drew a penalty from the Lakers, went on a power play and capitalized to tie the game off of Tilly Couture. This did not stop the Lakers and they fought back to win the game with two more goals from Lauren Riccobelli and Katie Demars.
The next morning, the Lakers traveled to SUNY Cortland for another SUNYAC matchup, where they lost 3-1 to the Red Dragons. It was a very slow first period for both teams, with shots on net and skating up and down the ice until Cortland’s Fanny Aneborn shot and scored on Oswego’s Mia DeVivo to get the game rolling.
After the goal, there were only 20 seconds left in the period and the Red Dragons had momentum in their hands. As the second period approached, the Lakers had to respond, but nine minutes into the second period, Lakers’ Natalie Loncz drew a two-minute penalty for roughing, giving the Red Dragons a massive opportunity in the middle of the period to go up by two.
The Red Dragons did not capitalize on the opportunity though, and the Lakers responded to full strength in no time.
Going into the final period, Meagan Smith won the face off, giving Oswego the puck. After two minutes of puck movement for the Lakers, Julia Power tossed the puck over to Loncz, who shot and scored, putting the Lakers right back in this game, tying it up at 1-1 early in the third.
As the clock was ticking down, someone had to do something and Aneborn did just that, getting her second goal of the night, giving the Red Dragons the lead 2-1 late in the game. With DeVivo out of the goal for Oswego, Cortland’s Carlen Bertrand took advantage of the empty net with one minute two seconds remaining to seal the game for the Red Dragons.
