As winter finally approaches, the weather worsens and so do the conditions in which students have to walk to classes.
Several departments on campus work together to ensure to the best of their ability, that students who need accommodations can get to class safely.
âAccessibility work at SUNY Oswego is carried out collaboratively across all departments and led by knowledgeable practitioners and advocates, Kathleen Colucci, director of the Office of Accessibility Resources, and Dr. Starr Wheeler, the universityâs ADA/504 compliance officer, in concert with faculty, staff and key partners such as Facilities Services, the Office of the Dean of Students, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion,â Dr. Wheeler wrote in an article.
The Office of Accessibility Resources believes that it is essential to report accessibility barriers in order to foster an inclusive and equitable environment for all students on campus, especially those with disabilities. When a ramp or a button that is used to help open a door is blocked or malfunctioning, accessibility on campus can be significantly impacted. The Office of Accessibility Resources wants students to report these issues in a timely manner.
âPromptly reporting these issues allows for timely resolution and ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),â Wheeler said.
The Office of Accessibility Resources understands that providing an inclusive environment for all students is important to receiving a full education and participation in the SUNY Oswego community.
âThe office provides support services, adaptive technologies and other assistance required to help all students succeed,â Wheeler said. âSUNY Oswego provides reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities on a case-by-case basis. Accommodations are determined through an interactive process.â
There are various ways students can help the campus improve upon accommodation resources. When noticing a blocked ramped or a malfunctioning button, students can call or email Facilities Services in order for them to fix it.
If a student requires any accommodations, they can register with the Office of Accessibility Resources online. Students can also visit their office in the Marano Campus Center, Room 155.
