After putting the finishing touches on a regular season that saw the group assert a record of 7-1, the Oswego State women’s tennis team arrived at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center in Binghamton to kick off SUNYAC tournament play.
They faced SUNY Cortland first, and, two days later, took on Daemen in a non-conference bout. The Lakers clinched the second seed in the tournament, getting the confront against the Red Dragons in the semifinals, played on Friday, Oct. 17. The established duo of Emily DeLuca and Leah Bell competed in an unfinished battle with Lisa Schulz and Christina Massoni, which was succeeded by one back-and-forth clash that saw Isabella Eason and Kate Hayes come out on top, in a 6-4 win over Gabriella Stanley and Alexandra Thut. Avery Borman and Ashlyn Feneck controlled the tempo in their match, as they closed out the doubles portion with a triumphant 6-2 win over Emma Morley and Anneli Adams.
The singles segment told a different story than the previous matches. Schulz blazed past Borman, with a 2-0 victory, setting the bar for teammate Massoni in the next match, who blanked Bell – giving the Red Dragons two early shutouts. However, two experienced racketeers – DeLuca and Eason – worked to turn the tides back in favor of the Lakers, as both put forth all-around efforts to secure shutout wins in each of their outings. It was the final two meetings of the day that decided the victor, as Hayes and Mary Repass first faced off, with the competition going to three sets. Repass ultimately secure a 6-1 victory in a conquering final set and Olivia Kirch built off of the established momentum, as she concluded the day with a commanding 2-0 win over Hannah Freed, to help the Red Dragons thwart the Lakers, 4-3.
The Lakers headed back to Oswego for their final contest of the fall season, as they matched up with the Daemen Wildcats on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Romney Tennis Courts. Marley Conover and Stephanie Baier proved to be too much for DeLuca and Bell, with a seamless 6-1 win in the first doubles contest of the day. The slump then continued for the Lakers, as Eason and Hayes were bested by Bella Bjerkan and Carly Armitage in a 6-2 loss, although closers, Borman and Feneck, worked together to secure a 6-4 win.
Each Wildcat split off from their other half in the singles matches; although no competitor lost a step. Conover kicked the slate off, getting the better of Borman in a flawless 2-0 victory, while Baier did much of the same, with 6-1 wins in each of her two sets against Bell to clinch a shutout win. The Wildcats continued to run the table, as both Bjerkan and Armitage cruised to wins in their respective matches, followed by a statement performance from Goodemote, as the sophomore earned a stress-free 2-0 victory over Hayes. Ashley Bonilla and Alexis Christian then faced off, as both underclassmen stepped onto the courts for the first time on the day, with Bonilla of the Wildcats squeaking out a win – finalizing a dominant 7-0 performance from the visiting squad.
The Lakers wrapped up their fall campaign with an overall record of 7-3, highlighted by efficient individual performances on a consistent basis. While it did end in two unfortunate results, there is still a lot to look forward to, with a mix of young talent along with veteran leadership helping to lead the way. The Lakers resume play in the spring of 2026, and look to make a deep run into the SUNYAC.
