The Oswego State women’s volleyball team faced one of its most demanding stretches of the season: playing five matches over five days and emerged with an incredible 4–1 mark. The Lakers showcased their depth, resilience and offensive firepower during the Oswego tournament, finishing with yet another convincing road win against SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
The stretch began Sep. 19, inside Laker Hall, as Oswego hosted the inaugural day of the Oswego Lakers Invitational. In the afternoon session, the Lakers opened with a domination sweep of SUNY Brockport, taking sets 25-14, 25-23 and 25-21. Oswego maintained control over the entire match with a consistent, balanced attack while holding Brockport. Grace Gdovin had an inspired day with the offensive power, having ten kills and adding 12 digs in a two-way performance. Kalley Vugteveen matched that production with ten kills of her own. Though the second and third sets were tighter, the Lakers’ momentum and control in the game confirmed the sweep.
After a short break, the Lakers returned for their evening match against Keuka and secured another 3–0 sweep (25-23, 26-24, 25-14). Oswego secured intense pressure in the first two frames with the minimum score to win the sets. In the third set, the Lakers dominated, showcasing their strength this year with an 11-point advantage over the Wolves. Priscilla McReynolds led the attack with nine kills and Vugteveen added seven kills and five blocks.
Saturday brought two tough matchups for the Lakers. In the morning, the Lakers went head-to-head with Western Connecticut State and pushed the match all the way to a fifth set before falling just short in an 11-15 finish, dropping the contest 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 11-15), the only loss of the Lakers this week. Vugteveen led the way with 17 kills and McReynolds chipped in 11 kills and 17 digs. Alaina Dudzinski made her presence felt at the net with seven block assists, and Bush handed out an incredible 46 assists. Despite plenty of late chances, the Lakers could not close out the fifth set.
The Lakers bounced back in the afternoon with a decisive 3-1 win over Utica (25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 25-19). After a rough second set, the Lakers got control back in and dominated the rest of the match. Vugteveen again paced the attack with 16 kills, while McReynolds added 13 and Dudzinski posted ten. Bush stayed steady with 44 assists and two service aces. The highlight of the match came when Bush recorded her 1,000th career assist, marking a significant milestone.
On Tuesday night, Oswego traveled to Utica to face SUNY Poly in a non-conference matchup. The Lakers dropped the opening set 25-20, but came back strong, winning three straight to take the match 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 25-15). Vugteveen once again led the offense with 16 kills. McReynolds had a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs, while Basile added nine kills and Dudzinski chipped in six without an error. Bush again finished with more than 40 assists.
