Women’s tennis sweeps Fredonia; fourth straight 7-0 victory

The Oswego State women’s tennis team kept their rackets blazing when they trounced the Fredonia Blue Devils, 7-0 on Sept. 15, at the Romney Tennis Courts. Their shutout over the Blue Devils marked the Lakers’ fourth consecutive 7-0 victory, and brought their record on the year up to 4-0.

The competition commenced in Oswego with three doubles matches – all of which the Lakers dominated in. Emily DeLuca and Leah Bell set the tone in the first bout, as they took down Amelia Stathatos and Gabriella Farr, 6-0. Sabrina Achki and Avery Borman built off of the already established momentum in their game, as the two worked together to obtain another shutout of the same score. The Lakers then put on a strong showing in the final doubles set of the day, when Isabella Eason and Kate Hayes imposed their will on the Blue Devils en route to a triumphant 6-0 blank over the opposition.

Borman and Farr kicked off the first of six singles contests. Farr put up a fight as she tacked on the Blue Devils’ first three points of the day, but the experienced Borman quickly gained the edge to capture a victory. Achki was next up, and she handled business with a quick 12-0 win over her opponent in two games. Bell kept the momentum going, as she swiftly put down Emily Solazzo, 12-1 in two games, followed by a commanding performance from DeLuca, who came out on top over Stathatos, 12-1. The onslaught continued through the last two matches, as both Eason and Hayes backed their opponents into a wall with a 12-0 shutout in each match.

Head coach Tyler Glowaki is more optimistic than ever. “The biggest strength of my team is their willingness to improve and listen. The top players especially really want to get better, and even during practice will ask if they can compete against the men’s teams in order to get better,” coach Glowaki said. “It’s this type of mentality that’s helped them improve so much and become such a strong team.”

The Lakers are coming off of a strong 2024 season in which they finished 14-3, but unfortunately fell to the SUNY New Paltz Hawks in the SUNYAC Championship. However, with a slew of experienced racketeers up and down the roster, such as Bell, DeLuca and Achki, among others, the team is poised to make another deep run into the postseason.

The Lakers remain home for their next matchup, as they are set to face off against the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, who currently hold a record of 1-1, on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. on the Oswego Tennis Courts.
